Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Basic Needs and Food Security Coordinator to join our team. In this vital role, you will lead efforts to ensure access to essential resources such as food other basic needs for vulnerable populations. Your energy and organizational skills will drive impactful programs that promote food security and overall well-being.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the community by coordinating services, managing partnerships, and empowering individuals to achieve stability and independence.

Food security and basic needs programming

Experience developing, coordinating, and delivering food security, basic needs, community kitchen, and community-based programming.

Experience supporting individuals and families experiencing poverty, food insecurity, homelessness, mental and physical health challenges, and other barriers to accessing community resources.

Knowledge of food-related programming, kitchen operations, safe food handling, food storage, food transformation, and community food distribution.

Experience coordinating food donations, food pickups, food transformation, and distribution in collaboration with staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners.

Knowledge of public health requirements and experience maintaining safe, compliant food programming and kitchen environments.

Experience preparing food safely for community programs, events, and other food-related initiatives.

Community development and outreach

Understanding of community development service delivery and experience identifying and responding to emerging community needs and service gaps.

Experience developing and maintaining partnerships with community agencies, schools, businesses, food donors, funders, and other community stakeholders.

Experience conducting community outreach and engaging participants and volunteers in programs and services.

Ability to represent an organization professionally at community meetings, working groups, city-wide tables, and broader community networks.

Strong communication and relationship-building skills with community members, professional partners, funders, volunteers, and other stakeholders.

Program development and coordination

Experience developing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating community-based programs and initiatives.

Robust project management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple programs, priorities, schedules, partnerships, and operational requirements.

Experience developing program processes, operational plans, training opportunities, and capacity-building initiatives for participants and volunteers.

Ability to identify gaps in programming and work collaboratively to develop appropriate and responsive programs, partnerships, and initiatives.

Experience facilitating working groups or collaborative meetings, including developing agendas, coordinating participants, documenting outcomes, and supporting follow-up actions.

Experience developing and coordinating training and capacity-building opportunities for youth and adults, including opportunities that support employment readiness, skill development, and pathways into the food industry.





Leadership and supervision

Experience supervising, supporting, and mentoring program staff, placement students, employment placements, and volunteers.

Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with experience providing direction, establishing priorities, assigning responsibilities and accountabilities, and supporting team performance.

Experience coordinating daily staffing and volunteer requirements to ensure adequate program and operational coverage.

Experience orienting, training, and providing ongoing direction to staff, students, volunteers, and program participants.

Experience supporting employee performance and development, including establishing objectives, providing feedback, and participating in performance appraisal processes.

Ability to provide supportive leadership while maintaining clear expectations, professional boundaries, and accountability.

Program evaluation, reporting, and administration

Experience collecting and maintaining accurate program statistics, participation records, and quantitative and qualitative program data.

Experience preparing program reports, funding reports, statistical updates, Board reports, budget updates, and other organizational reporting.

Strong organizational and administrative skills with the ability to maintain accurate records and meet established reporting deadlines.

Experience monitoring program budgets, tracking expenditures, managing program materials and supplies, and working within established financial procedures.

Ability to develop and maintain effective systems and processes for program evaluation, data collection, outcome measurement, knowledge sharing, and continuous program improvement.

Ability to use participant, client, volunteer, partner, and community feedback to strengthen programs, services, performance, and community relationships.

Funding and resource development

Experience identifying and pursuing funding, partnership, donation, and resource-development opportunities to strengthen community programming.

Ability to develop sustainable approaches to program delivery, including identifying revenue-generating opportunities and strategies to reduce reliance on external grant funding where appropriate.

Experience sourcing donated, discounted, or no-cost food, supplies, and other resources to support programming.

Participant and community support

Experience providing information, resources, referrals, and practical support to individuals experiencing barriers to food, basic needs, and community services.

Strong ability to develop supportive relationships with people experiencing poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, mental and physical health challenges, and other complex circumstances.

Ability to create and maintain safe, welcoming, inclusive,



and non-judgmental environments for diverse community members.

Ability to respect individual dignity, privacy, circumstances, and choice while providing appropriate support and referrals.

Ability to remain calm, supportive, responsive, and solutions-focused in fast-paced and changing environments.

Communication, promotion, and collaboration

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Experience preparing and delivering information or presentations to community members, partners, funders, stakeholders, Board Members, and other audiences.

Experience promoting community programs and services through outreach, social media, websites, promotional materials, and other appropriate communication channels.

Ability to collaborate with communications staff and other team members to ensure programs, services, events, and opportunities are effectively promoted to intended audiences.

Experience working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and with external community partners.

Ability to communicate clearly and consistently, receive and incorporate feedback, and contribute positively to shared organizational goals.

Organizational development and strategic contribution

Experience contributing to organizational goals, strategic priorities, and broader community initiatives.

Ability to contribute to the development, review, and implementation of organizational policies, procedures, processes, and best practices.

Ability to identify opportunities for organizational and program improvement and contribute constructively to planning and decision-making.

Commitment to participating in team meetings, organizational events, community activities, ongoing training, and professional development.

Organization, initiative, and adaptability

Ability to organize and prioritize multiple responsibilities while working independently with minimal supervision.

Required education, certifications, and experience

2–3 years of related work experience.

Completion of relevant post-secondary education in social services, community
