Casual Supply Teaching Assistant / Recreation & Life Skills Facilitator – Adults with Autism & IDD

White Pines Academy provides specialized educational skill-building, life-skills, recreational, respite, and community-based programming for adults (18+) with autism and intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDD).

Our programs focus on developing independence, communication, social skills, self-advocacy, emotional regulation, community participation, and practical daily living skills within a supportive, structured, and inclusive environment.

We are currently seeking 2–3 reliable, compassionate, and adaptable casual supply staff to join our supply pool and provide coverage across our programs as needed.

Depending on programming and staffing needs, casual staff may work within our Success Through Structure educational program and/or recreation, life-skills, day, and respite programming.

Key Scheduling Information

This is a casual, as-needed position with no guaranteed minimum hours or number of shifts. Hours may vary from 0–40 hours per week depending on staffing, enrollment, program needs, and available shifts. There may be periods when no work is available.

In addition to as-needed supply coverage, casual staff may occasionally be offered scheduled shifts in advance to maintain familiarity with students/clients, programming, routines, and procedures. These shifts depend on enrollment, staffing, and operational needs and are not guaranteed.

Our Success Through Structure program currently operates Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with staff shifts generally from 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Additional casual opportunities may become available through recreation, life-skills, day, and respite programming depending on enrollment, client needs, and program schedules.

Casual staff are not required to accept every shift offered. However, once a shift has been accepted, reliability and attendance are essential.

This position is best suited to someone seeking flexible, occasional employment rather than guaranteed part-time or full-time hours.

All work is in person. This is not a remote or work-from-home position.

Key Responsibilities

- Support and facilitate structured lessons, activities, and individualized skill-development programs
- Support goals related to communication, social skills, emotional regulation, academics, independent living, community participation, and pre-employment skills
- Facilitate recreational and life-skills activities such as arts and crafts, music, exercise, cooking/baking, games, community activities, and daily living skills
- Adapt activities to individual abilities, communication styles,



learning needs, and levels of independence
- Support individuals who use AAC and other alternative communication systems
- Provide prompting and individualized assistance according to established programming and behavioural support strategies
- Participate in community outings and real-world skill development
- Observe progress, collect data, and complete required documentation
- Support positive behaviour and emotional regulation according to established strategies and plans
- Prepare and organize teaching and activity materials
- Assist with program setup, organization, cleanup, and end-of-day responsibilities
- Collaborate with other staff to provide consistent and effective support
- Maintain a safe, respectful, organized, and inclusive environment
- Provide personal-care assistance, including toileting and hygiene support, when required

Training Because our programming is highly individualized, new casual staff receive orientation and training before working independently.

Training may include observation, supervised participation, direct engagement with students/clients, program and material preparation, community outings, documentation and data collection, and opportunities to facilitate programming while receiving feedback.

Staff are expected to be comfortable learning established approaches and gradually taking on greater responsibility as familiarity and competency are demonstrated.

Qualifications

Required:

- Diploma or degree in Developmental Services, Psychology, Social Service Work, Behavioural Science, Education, Special Education, Recreation Therapy, or a related field
- Minimum one year of experience supporting individuals with autism and/or intellectual/developmental disabilities
- Strong communication, teamwork, professionalism, patience, and adaptability
- Ability to follow established individualized programming, support plans, and organizational procedures
- Willingness to learn, receive feedback, and participate in training
- Vulnerable Sector Check or willingness to obtain one
- First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain it

Strongly Preferred

- Valid G driver's licence and reliable transportation

Assets





- Experience supporting adults with autism and/or intellectual/developmental disabilities
- Experience with Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) principles and strategies
- RBT certification or completion of the free online 40-hour RBT training is considered an asset. Candidates who have not completed the training but are willing to obtain it may also be considered.
- Experience supporting individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), including PECS and Proloquo2Go
- Experience with data collection and individualized skill-development programming
- Experience with community-based programming and independent living/life-skills development
- Experience in developmental services, education, respite, recreation, or day programming

Compensation

$23.50 per hour + 4% vacation pay
