The RT Extern is an integral member of the healthcare team, working collaboratively with the support of a Clinical Extern Coordinator as an unregulated care provider, in the HGH, JHCC or MCH Respiratory Therapy Departments. The RT Extern responsibilities include working under the direction of a RRT to support high quality care for patients and families, while demonstrating a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience. A RT Extern would bring beginner level experience and knowledge in respiratory therapy principles, RT equipment, respiratory supplies, medical gas management, cleaning, calibration and non-clinical secretarial and/or customer service support.

The RT Extern position is open to Respiratory Therapy Students enrolled in their 2nd and 3rd year of a CRTO approved diploma Respiratory Therapy program. Externs will be hired on a temporary casual part-time basis until June 30, 2027.





- Completion of first year or second year (enrolled in 2nd and 3rd year) of a Respiratory Therapy diploma program. Preference will be given to candidates from Fanshawe and Conestoga College.
- Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a quick paced environment.
- Demonstrated strong communication and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated infection prevention and control practices.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated successful completion of a recent clinical placement. Preference will be given to candidates with previous clinical placement experience at Hamilton Health Sciences.
