Electrical Engineer – Government & Institutional Projects

About Ziyutec

Ziyutec Inc. is a growing Canadian multidisciplinary engineering consulting firm with offices in Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa.

Approximately 80% of our current work is for government and public-sector clients. Our projects include federal and provincial government facilities, institutional buildings, office renovations and fit-ups, electrical system upgrades, emergency power and generator projects, life-safety systems, commissioning, and other existing-building projects across Canada.

As our project portfolio continues to grow, we are looking for an Electrical Engineer to join our team.

This position is open to candidates at different experience levels. We are interested in strong intermediate engineers as well as experienced senior engineers. Responsibilities and compensation will reflect the successful candidate's experience and capabilities.

Responsibilities The successful candidate will support and progressively take responsibility for building electrical engineering projects, including:

- Electrical design for existing buildings, renovations, office fit-ups and building upgrades
- Power distribution system design and modification
- Lighting and lighting control systems
- Emergency lighting and life-safety electrical systems
- Emergency power and standby generator systems
- Transfer switches, distribution equipment and associated system upgrades
- Electrical load calculations, equipment sizing and system assessments
- Assessment of existing electrical infrastructure and development of upgrade recommendations
- Fire alarm system design and coordination
- Coordination of electrical systems with mechanical, architectural, structural and other disciplines
- Preparation of electrical drawings, specifications, reports and cost estimates
- Site investigations, field reviews and existing-condition assessments
- Review of shop drawings and contractor submissions




- Construction administration and responses to RFIs
- Participation in client, design and construction meetings
- Support for commissioning, integrated systems testing and other building-system verification activities
- Compliance with applicable electrical codes, building codes, standards and government/client requirements
- Delivery of projects in accordance with established schedules and quality requirements

A significant portion of our work involves existing government, institutional and commercial buildings rather than residential construction.

Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
- Approximately 5–20 years of relevant experience; candidates outside this range with strong relevant experience may also be considered
- Strong building electrical / MEP consulting experience
- Experience with electrical distribution, lighting, emergency power and building electrical systems
- Experience with renovation, retrofit, office fit-up, institutional or government projects strongly preferred
- P.Eng. designation in Ontario preferred; candidates eligible for registration will also be considered
- Strong AutoCAD skills; Revit experience is an asset
- Experience preparing engineering drawings and specifications
- Good knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code, Ontario Electrical Safety Code and other applicable standards
- Ability to perform site investigations and develop practical engineering solutions for existing buildings
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary project teams
- Valid driver's licence and ability to travel to project sites when required

Preferred Assets
- Federal or provincial government project experience
- Emergency power and generator project experience
- Fire alarm and life-safety system experience




- Commissioning and integrated systems testing experience
- Experience with healthcare, institutional, defence or mission-critical facilities
- Existing Government of Canada Reliability or Secret security clearance

Government Project Requirements Because a substantial portion of Ziyutec's work involves Government of Canada and other public-sector facilities, candidates must be able to meet the eligibility requirements for the security screening applicable to assigned projects.

Previous experience with federal, provincial, municipal, institutional, defence, RCMP, PSPC/BGIS or similar public-sector facilities is highly desirable.

We are looking for someone who can contribute to the actual delivery of building electrical engineering projects — investigating existing conditions, developing practical designs, producing quality engineering documents, coordinating with other disciplines, meeting project deadlines, and communicating effectively with clients and contractors.

We particularly value engineers who are comfortable working on existing buildings where field investigation, engineering judgment and practical problem-solving are as important as design calculations.

For a more experienced candidate, there will be opportunities to assume greater responsibility for project delivery, client coordination, technical review and the future development of Ziyutec's electrical engineering practice.
