Our emergency department is open, busy, and growing — and we need more great emergency veterinarians.

VAC-ED is up and running and our community has shown up in a big way. Demand for after-hours emergency care in Durham Region, Scugog, Uxbridge and the Kawarthas is high, and we're adding DVMs so our team can keep up with that demand without burning out. ABOUT VAC-ED

VAC-ED is the emergency arm of Vets Around the Corner, an independently owned, family-operated veterinary organization in downtown Port Perry. We aren't owned by a corporation. The decisions here are made by the people who work here.

Our emergency service runs 24/7 from Friday at 8:00 a.m. to Monday at 8:00 a.m. We use a structured five-level triage system and work alongside our general practice team (VAC-GP). Our mission is simple: when our people thrive, our patients and our community do too.

THE ROLE

- Weekend emergency coverage (Friday 8 a.m. – Monday 8 a.m.), with rotating day and overnight shifts
- Full-time, part-time and casual options, so you can build the schedule that works for you
- Emergent, urgent and surgical care
- Direct collaboration with specialists in critical care, anesthesia and other disciplines, so you have the right clinical support for each case and ongoing training alongside them
- A real say in protocols, workflows and how our emergency service grows from here

A HOSPITAL THAT CARES BEYOND ITS WALLS Our work doesn't stop at the front door. Vets Around the Corner founded the VAC Community Veterinary Program (VAC-CVP), a federally registered not-for-profit that takes veterinary care to people and animals who need it most:
- A mobile clinic ambulance that brings veterinary care out into the community
- Vet Medic, our veterinary emergency preparedness and response team. In July 2026 our team deployed to Thunder Bay to run a veterinary field hospital for families and animals displaced by wildfires, most of them from First Nations communities.
- Finlo's Cause,



which trains firefighters in animal rescue and is named for a dog lost in a house fire
- Community outreach, including a volunteer Turtle Patrol and accessible-care initiatives

VAC-ED veterinarians are welcome to take part in these programs if they want to, including future emergency deployments. If you became a vet to make a difference, you'll find plenty of ways to do it here.

REQUIREMENTS

- DVM or equivalent from an accredited institution
- Licensed with the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO), or eligible for licensure
- Legally eligible to work in Canada
- Able to pass a criminal record check
- Emergency experience preferred. Motivated GP veterinarians who want to move into emergency are encouraged to apply.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, and steady under pressure
