Handyman/Farm Hand

Want to work on a farm and not leave the city of Nanaimo?

We are a small, family-run farm looking to build out our infrastructure and expand our team! We are seeking a versatile, jack-of-all-trades Farm Hand/Handyman to join us for a full-time, year-round position (40 hours a week). This dynamic role is a unique blend of daily plant-focused agricultural operations, comprehensive property maintenance, and progressive farm construction.

While your primary focus and daily hub will be the main farm, this role also involves occasional maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work across three additional properties (4 sites total).

We need a motivated problem-solver who can seamlessly transition from digging irrigation trenches and mowing to framing walls, drywalling, and handling facility upkeep across our locations. If you have a strong background in construction or plumbing, love working outdoors, and take pride in fixing things and building a property up from the ground, this position is for you. (Note: This is a plant-focused farm; there are no livestock duties).

Responsibilities

Construction & Property Maintenance (Handyman Duties)

- Multi-Site Maintenance: Act as the primary handyman across 4 distinct sites, handling occasional troubleshooting and fixes at off-site properties while maintaining the main farm as your daily base.
- Infrastructure Build-Out: Lead and assist in ongoing farm construction projects at the main site, including framing walls and finishing interior spaces.
- Carpentry & Drywall: Build and install custom functional elements such as cabinets, counters, workbenches, and shelving. Hang drywall, tape, mud, sand,



and finish interior walls.
- General Repairs: Diagnose, troubleshoot, and fix structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, or general facility issues across all properties as they arise.
- Property Upkeep: Perform comprehensive seasonal maintenance across sites, including power washing building exteriors, cleaning out gutters, and maintaining storage sheds.
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on farm machinery and power tools to ensure optimal and safe operation.

Agricultural & Grounds Operations (Farm Hand Duties)

- Irrigation & Field Work: Dig trenches for new irrigation installations and assist with the setup, repair, and management of watering systems for our plants.
- Groundskeeping: Maintain the property grounds to a high standard through extensive mowing, weeding, raking, and clearing brush or debris.
- Heavy Machinery Operation: Drive and operate heavy farm machinery safely for tasks such as land clearing, road maintenance, and heavy lifting.
- Fencing: Build, mend, and maintain farm fencing to ensure property security and functionality.
- Plant Care: Support general horticultural activities and field preparation to ensure healthy crop and plant growth.

Requirements





- Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel occasionally between the 4 property sites.
- Proven hands-on experience in general construction and carpentry (both framing and finishing work).
- Experience with drywall installation and finishing, including hanging, taping, mudding, and sanding.
- Demonstrated mechanical knowledge with a knack for understanding how to fix things independently.
- Experience operating heavy farm equipment (tractors, skid steers, etc.) and proficiency with a wide range of hand and power tools.
- Comfortable performing demanding physical labor, including digging trenches, heavy lifting, and prolonged outdoor activity in various weather conditions.
- Familiarity with basic plant care, landscaping, or horticulture is a plus.
- Self-starter with a strong work ethic, attention to safety procedures, and a proactive approach to building and maintaining property.
- A team player who can be versatile—no two days are the same!
- Must be a good communicator, reliable, trustworthy, and a self-starter.
- Must be legal to work in Canada

Pay: $25.00-$32.00 per hour
