Position Summary The Health Studies Lab Technician works to provide an ideal lab environment that facilitates the specific learning objectives for all multi-faceted courses supported by the Health Studies Labs. Reporting directly to the Manager of Operations in the Faculty of Integrated Health and Community Care (IHCC) and consulting closely with program faculty leads, supervisors and coordinators, the Lab Technician provides support for all Health Studies lab facilities through tracking, maintaining and purchasing lab equipment, as well as interacting closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the best lab experiences for students, faculty and staff.

Responsibilities

- Assists with scheduling changes and unexpected conflicts as they arise in all Lab areas.




- Prepares supply kits and organizes equipment for each scheduled lab activity according to the specific instruction of each program and provides supplies for students’ self-scheduled practice outside of lab hours
- Facilitates the annual simulation exercises of major healthcare and first response agencies across the GTA
- Ensures that adequate supply inventories are maintained across the various labs, reordering on a timely basis as needed, providing expertise for equipment operation
- Participates in all annual routine and extraordinary Health Science labs inventory audits
- Identifies items for repair/maintenance to the Manager of Operations as well as engages in the on-going care and maintenance of equipment
- Collates and manages disposal of Bio-Hazard Waste Material for all Health Sciences labs
- Thoroughly researches new equipment acquisitions and projects to ensure compliance with program/project needs
- Identifies and makes purchase recommendations for equipment/supplies and evaluates potential suppliers
- Prepares purchase requisitions, coordinates with vendors and internal purchasing officers, tracks purchases and ensures purchases meet expectations in accordance with College policies and procedures
- Provides support and back up for clinical simulation equipment, providing assistance to Simulation Technician and providing back up for the Mask Fit Technician

Qualifications/Experience

- Two-year diploma in Business Administration, Materials Management, Supply Chain Management, Healthcare, or a related discipline that provides knowledge applicable to purchasing, inventory control, vendor coordination, budget tracking, and operational support.
- Current CPR Certificate is required
- Three years of related, practical experience in business or materials management.



Medical/Healthcare experience is strongly preferred.
- Must have at least one-year of experience in an academic environment with experience communicating/liaising with college level students
- Must have at least one-year of experience with scheduling and purchasing activities
- TDG Certificate (Transportation of Dangerous Goods) and Mask Fit Certificate is an asset
- Flexibility to shift priorities; reaching compromises in changing priorities/deadlines
- Ability to work under pressure, dealing with people in a courteous manner with frequent interruptions
- Strong organizational skills and effective oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated customer service skills with strength in tact and diplomacy
- Strong team member abilities, and conflict resolution skills
- Experience supporting the day-to-day operation of healthcare, clinical, simulation, science, or other specialized instructional laboratory environments.
- Experience and understanding of working effectively in a diverse Academic setting
- Ability to lift equipment up to 45 pounds
