Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Constitutional Law Civil Litigation Counsel specializing in Human Rights cases, with a focus on pro bono and limited retainer work. This role offers an exciting prospect to advocate for justice in behalf of marginalized self-represented litigants, uphold human rights principles, and make a meaningful impact through legal representation. The successful candidate must be empathetic and embrace compassion as a lawyer, and demonstrate a commitment to ethics over greed which stereotypically affects many lawyers, and will leverage their expertise in civil litigation and human rights law to support individuals and communities facing discrimination, inequality, or violations of their fundamental rights.

This position is paid and ideal for a proactive legal professional eager to champion social justice initiatives within a dynamic legal environment.

The successful candidate will also preside over our grant applications to support marginalized self-represented litigants.

The successful candidate should have a background in supporting social activism and should be a champion of civil rights and freedoms.

The successful candidate should also be already financially secure but is seeking new challenges in law to make a constructive mark on the Quebec justice system as a champion of the oppressed in the legal system.

Responsibilities





- Provide legal counsel and representation in civil litigation cases related to human rights issues within Quebec jurisdiction.
- Argue cases in hearings already prepared and submitted to the court / tribunal.
- Engage in negotiations with opposing counsel to seek favourable outcomes while maintaining professionalism and adherence to ethical standards.
- Collaborate with advocacy groups, community organizations, and stakeholders to ensure client needs are effectively addressed.

Qualifications

- Must be licensed to practice law in Quebec as an absolute necessity.
- Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution; licensed to practice law in Quebec.
- Proven experience in civil litigation, with a strong understanding of human rights law and related legal frameworks.
- Strong negotiation abilities to advocate effectively on behalf of clients while fostering constructive dialogue with opposing parties.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex legal issues critically and develop strategic solutions.
- Bilingual proficiency in French and English is highly preferred to serve diverse client populations effectively.
