Job Summary
The Victoria Native Friendship Centre (VNFC) RegisteredNurse (RN) provides culturally safe, full-scope primary health care to theurban Indigenous community living in Southern Vancouver Island. The RN,reporting the VNFC Director of Wellness, works with an interdisciplinary careteam at the Camas Lelum Primary Care Centre to provide longitudinal primaryhealth care to Indigenous community of all ages. The RN works independently andas part of the team to provide care that honours the culture of all communitymembers, and actively supports connection to both Western and Indigenousknowledge and practice.
Roles and Responsibilities
As a Registered Nurse, job duties include thefollowing:
- Works within the RN scope of practice to provide secure andeffective primary care to Indigenous community of all ages with a range ofacute and chronic health needs. Able to independently conduct an initialassessment and determine if care falls within RN scope or requirescollaboration with other team members and provides care as appropriate.
- Care activities include nursing assessment, chronic diseasemanagement (CDM), health promotion and CDM prevention, health education,vaccinations, sexual health within scope for Certified Practice, wound care,basic mental health and substance use care, health planning and coordination ofcare, advanced care planning and other care within scope as needed.
- Collaborate with clients and their families to access externalhealth resources including hospitals, specialized clinics, social serviceagencies, Community Health Services, First Nations Health Authority, FirstNations, mental health services, and other partners as needed.
- Provides care in-person at Camas Lelum, at First Nations, the VNFCor other outreach locations as needed. Provides care over the phone or throughvirtual visits as needed.
- Conducts accurate and timely documentation in the ElectronicMedical Record in accordance with college standards and in support of safe andeffective team-based care.
- Collaborates effectively with other members of theinterdisciplinary team at the VNFC including Nurse Practitioners, physicians,medical office assistants, mental health and substance support, RegisteredClinical Counselor, Indigenous Wellness Providers, and others required.
- Supports and leads health promotion programming for communitymembers either independently or as part of the interdisciplinary team. Thisincludes organizing and facilitating group health promotion programming usingWestern and Indigenous teachings.
- Mentor nursing students with clinical placements or projects atthe VNFC.
- Participate in the development of policy and standards of care inorder to support ongoing quality assurance and improvement.
- Maintain confidentiality
- Document and report activity in alignment with VNFC practices andsupports internal and external reporting as required
- Attend relevant professional training and meetings when directed
- Participate in staff development, staff meetings and departmentmeetings as required, including community and cultural events
- Participate in data collection and evaluationtasks as requested
Knowledge and Skills
- Familiarityand experience in Indigenous Communities
- Someknowledge of Indigenous cultures and practices including from the territory inwhich the work of VNFC takes place.Ability to speak about one’s own Indigenous culture, if applicable, andany communities the (prospective) employee has previously lived in or held jobswithin.
- In-depthknowledge of the experience of Indigenous peoples in Canada including theongoing processes of colonization, discrimination, and structural violence, andthe effects on the health and wellbeing of Indigenous communities;understanding of the wellness and healing capacities of Indigenous culturalresiliency and resurgence.
- Knowledgeand practice of providing community-basedservices to Indigenous peoples using philosophies of cultural humility andcultural safety.
Communication Skills and Abilities
- Excellent interpersonal communication skillswith the ability to successfully develop and maintain relationships withdiverse internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to effectively present informationand respond to questions from clients and the general public
- Abilityto read,
process and integrate findings into practice from a range of resourcesincluding peer-reviewed literature and governmental reports.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 includingWord, Excel, and Outlook
Leadership Skills and Abilities
- Abilityto work independently and be part of an integrated community team and inpartnership with a variety of agencies.
- Abilityto multi-task while remaining composed and maintaining a professional attitudein high stress situations.
Program Knowledge andAbilities
- Ability to practice using philosophies ofcultural safety and humility, harm reduction, and trauma informed care.
- Knowledge and ability to work ethically andmaintain professional boundaries when working with vulnerable clients.
- Ability to spend a major portion of the workdaystanding, walking and/or sitting as well as Qualifications
Education
- Registrationwith the BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registran
- CertifiedPractice for Reproductive Health (Sexually Transmitted Infections) preferred orreceived within 6 months of employment
- Recognizedcourse(s) in cultural safety and humility or equivalent life and/orprofessional experience
Work Experience
- Minimumtwo years (2) recent clinical nursing experience in related clinical areasincluding assessing and treating infants, children, youth, adults, and seniorsin a primary care setting, community setting, outpatient setting, or publichealth; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Preferencefor past experience working in an Indigenous-servingorganization or community nonprofit setting.
Licenses and/or Certificates
- ValidBC Driver’s license
- CleanDriver’s record
- BasicLife Support Level C
- Mustprovide a current (within 6 mos.) Attorney General Vulnerable Sector CriminalRecord Check
