This position has a term length of 2 years.

Location -This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

The Research Coordinator (RC) position will be shared between Dr. Sadie Deschene’s (0.4 FTE) and Dr. Sarah Andersen’s (0.3 FTE) research programs. The RC will coordinate projects within Dr. Deschenes’s and Dr. Andersen’s research programs, support ongoing initiatives, and facilitate project management.

Responsibilities include overseeing timelines, maintaining effective team communication, and integrating project components to achieve program objectives. The coordinator will also assist with grant development for future research competitions and perform both administrative and research tasks. Dr.

Sadie

Deschenes will be primarily responsible for feedback and performance reviews, while both Dr. Deschenes and Dr. Andersen will provide coaching and mentorship. Current projects focus on moral distress and ICU experiences of Métis people, funded by the University Hospital Foundation and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), as well as evaluating serious illness communication and end-of-life decision making in the ICU. The coordinator will participate in project planning, team meetings, data synthesis, and interpretation of findings. If authorship requirements are met, the coordinator will be included as a co-author on relevant manuscripts.

Responsibilities

Staff Safety

The research coordinator will provide research, administrative, and mentorship support:

Research support (60%)

- Facilitates research ethics submissions and ensures compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
- Maintains research documentation and organizes project materials to ensure easy team access.
- Coordinates participant recruitment and consent processes, as applicable.
- Tracks budget expenditures and provides updates to the supervisor.
- Manages timelines and deadlines for research deliverables and milestones by monitoring progress against the project plan and providing regular updates to the supervisor.
- Coordinates project activities with team members and conducts regular follow-ups.
- Contributes to report writing by compiling information, preparing initial drafts for supervisor review, and ensuring adherence to submission guidelines.
- Supports grant application development and dissemination of research findings.




- Assists with quantitative and qualitative data analysis as needed, under supervisor guidance.

Administrative support (30%):
- Schedules and organizes program meetings and records minutes.
- Manages program communications.
- Provides administrative support as needed, such as CV and resume management, organizing files, formatting and submitting manuscripts to academic journals, and handling ethics applications or renewals.
- Supports workshop planning and implementation by managing logistics, including room bookings and travel arrangements for team members.
- Communicates with the team about reimbursement procedures, scheduling, booking details, and workshop activities.

Mentorship (10%):
- Facilitates knowledge sharing and skill development within the team.
- Supports a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
- Supports onboarding and general mentorship within the research program.

Qualifications

- Master’s degree in a related discipline such as Nursing, Sociology, Indigenous studies, Community Health or Public Health is required
- Training in qualitative and/or quantitative social or health science research methods
- Experience coordinating social/health science research projects
- Excellent interpersonal skills and writing ability
- Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and have demonstrated initiative, independence, organization and productivity

The following qualifications are an asset:
- A background in nursing or a health sciences profession
- Research experience in qualitative methods research
- Research experience in mixed-method research or various types of knowledge synthesis approaches
- Experience in research focused on clinical settings, particularly Critical Care (ICU)
- Experience with NVivo, SPSS, STATA, and/or SAS
- Experience working with Indigenous organizations and/or experience with Indigenous research methods
- Familiarity with the University of Alberta administrative structure, policies and procedures about research
