About the role:

The Logic Briefing is one of the key ways our journalism reaches our readers. Every weekday afternoon it explains what matters and why, to subscribers who run Canadian business, tech and government. It is our most-read product, and it requires an editor who wakes up each day excited about making it better.

As senior editor, you will run the Briefing. You will decide what our reporters cover each day, assigning them and editing their copy on deadline. You will set the sked, write the display and get it out the door.

We need a creative editor with ideas about what newsletters can be, and with the rigour to test them—an innovator and a strategic thinker. Beyond the Briefing, you will lead the development of new newsletters and editorial products. You will also edit news stories and features, and help run the newsroom itself, assisting with planning newsroom coverage, the editorial calendar and building and managing the systems that help a small team punch well above its weight.

Reporting to the managing editor, you will be part of the newsroom’s leadership team. If you are an editor who has been waiting for the chance to step up, this is it.

The successful candidate will have sharp news judgment, a fast and clean editing hand and a love for the daily news cycle. They will be meticulous,



thinking in plans and processes and taking pleasure in making the machine run, but also someone who relishes surprising and delighting our readers with an unexpected choice or a well-turned phrase. They will be cool under pressure, a explicit communicator and a consummate newsroom diplomat.

They will be comfortable with numbers and data. They will have a working familiarity with Canadian media law. And they will be eager to help build a collegial, collaborative, goal-oriented newsroom that treats all its members with respect.

This is a full-time staff job with a salary range of $90,637 to $120,850. It is ideally based in Toronto, where The Logic offers a hybrid work arrangement. An exceptional candidate may be based elsewhere in Canada, but will work a schedule that aligns with the Eastern Time Zone.

What you'll do:

- Oversee The Logic Briefing, including assigning and editing daily news coverage
- Develop and launch new newsletters and editorial products that grow The Logic’s audience and business
- Assign and edit news stories and features across the newsroom as required
- Own the processes that keep a busy newsroom organized
- Help recruit, hire, manage and mentor editorial staff as The Logic’s newsroom grows
- Be an active partner in The Logic’s virtual and in-person live journalism events

Who you are:

- You have strong news judgment, a passion for great journalism and a track record of producing it
- You’re adept at editing business and technology news on deadline
- You are committed to accuracy, excellence and the rigorous pursuit of facts
- You’re ready to lead. You may not have managed a team yet, but you have led coverage, mentored colleagues and want more responsibility
- You’re comfortable with numbers, data and business as a subject
- You’re familiar with Canadian Press Style




- You have ideas about what a newsletter can be and the drive and rigour to test them
- You're comfortable working with a range of writing styles and formats and you promote diversity of thought and representation in storytelling
- You have a track record of building and/or supporting a healthy, inclusive work culture, helping teammates reach new professional heights and working across departments to achieve shared goals
- You’re organized and detail-oriented, You keep lists, close loops and notice what others miss.
