Specialized Bus Driver – High Needs Student Transportation

More than a driving role

Stoney Education Authority is looking for an experienced and compassionate Specialized Bus Driver to provide safe transportation for students who may have complex developmental, behavioural, communication, sensory, mobility, or other support needs.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working with high-needs students, understands that behaviour is often communication, and can remain calm, patient, and predictable when a student is having a difficult day.

This role combines safe driving with meaningful student support.

What You’ll Do

You will

- Safely transport students to and from school and other approved programs
- Build positive and respectful relationships with students
- Support students who may need additional assistance entering, exiting, or travelling in the vehicle
- Become familiar with student-specific transportation and safety plans
- Recognize signs of anxiety, sensory overload, distress, or escalation
- Use calm and appropriate de-escalation strategies when required
- Work closely with school staff, families, Transportation, Educational Assistants, and other SEA personnel
- Complete pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections
- Maintain required transportation and incident documentation
- Ensure students are transported safely, respectfully, and with dignity

We’re Looking for Someone With
- A valid Alberta Class 4 Driver’s Licence
- A safe driving record
- Previous experience working with children or youth with high needs
- Patience and strong relationship-building skills
- Good judgment and the ability to remain calm under pressure
- Strong communication skills
- Reliability and professionalism

- Respite care
- Special education
- Developmental services
- Specialized transportation

Experience supporting students with autism, developmental disabilities, behavioural needs, communication differences, sensory needs, or mobility needs is considered a strong asset. Working With Stoney Education Authority

The person behind the wheel can make an enormous difference in how a student begins and ends their school day. We are looking for someone who can provide consistency, safety, patience, and a calm presence for students who may need additional support.

Respect for Stoney Nakoda students, families, language, culture, traditions, and community is essential. Previous experience in a First Nations or Indigenous community is an asset, but a respectful attitude and willingness to learn are equally significant.

Conditions of Employment

Successful candidates will be required to provide:

- Valid Alberta Class 4 Driver’s Licence
- Satisfactory Driver’s Abstract
- Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check
- Satisfactory professional references
- Any additional training or certification required for the assigned transportation duties
