Volunteer Firefighter

The Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Department is a volunteer-based service that provides a range of programs to protect the lives and properties of the inhabitants of the Municipality from the adverse effects of fires, sudden medical emergencies, or exposure to dangerous conditions created by man or nature. The Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Department maintains a proud tradition and is a highly respected emergency service organization in the community. The Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Department operates three fire stations located in Strathroy, Mount Brydges, and Melbourne. The Administration Office for the department is located in Strathroy.

The Municipality of Strathroy Caradoc is currently accepting applications for volunteer firefighters at Station 1, 2 and 3.

Position Summary:

The Volunteer Firefighter will perform a number of tasks including fire protection and rescue services, fire inspection and public education within established policies and guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Accountability (Risk)

- Respond to fire, rescue, hazardous material emergencies, and other emergencies assigned to their station.
- Drive fire apparatus as assigned.
- Enter burning or contaminated buildings, structures and other areas to fight fires and/or perform rescue while wearing required personal protective equipment.
- Provide first aid to injured persons.
- Performs salvage work at fire and emergency scenes.
- Assist in maintaining/cleaning firefighting and rescue equipment and apparatus.
- Attends regular training sessions to practice existing procedures and to learn and practice new fire-fighting and rescue methods.




- Cleans and maintains areas of the fire station used by the members as scheduled.
- Assists with the fire prevention program.
- Other duties as assigned by the District Chief or Captain.

Financial

- Advises the Captain and/or (Deputy) District Chief of any repairs necessary to maintain the vehicles, equipment and stations.

Supervision

- Supervises the fire ground to ensure officers and firefighters operate in a manner consistent with established policies, procedures and accepted firefighting methods until a more senior firefighter/officer is on scene.

Policies and Procedure

- Understands and adheres to all Standard Operating Guidelines and Policy Directives.

Contacts- Internal/External

- Frequent contact with the public; requires appropriate tact in order to obtain co-operation and approval of action.

Availability for Training

- The Strathroy/Caradoc Fire Department has established that a minimum of twenty (20) regularly scheduled training sessions shall be conducted in each 12 months. All personnel are obligated to maintain a minimum of 70% attendance for training during the previous 12 continuous month period.
- Failure to be available to attend 70% of the required assigned training for any 12-month period may result in recommendation to the Fire Chief for termination of service.

Emergency Response Attendance

- The Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Department has established that to be an effective member of a cohesive emergency response team, a minimum attendance to emergency responses shall be a 50% of the assigned Stations call volume for any 12-month period.
- Failure to be available to respond to 50% of the assigned stations paged calls for any 12-month period may result in recommendation to the Fire Chief for termination of service.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

- Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalency preferred.
- Must be able to attend a minimum 70% of training sessions and meetings.
- Must have valid or be willing to obtain First Aid/CPR and S-AED certification.
- Must have already acquired or complete during probational period (1 year): NFPA 1001 Levels 1 and 2.
- Must be at least 18 years old.




- Legally eligible to work in Canada.
- Provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
- Must reside within the Strathroy-Caradoc response area (see Map in Recruitment Guide)
- Must have a valid or be willing to obtain DZ driver's license.
- A valid Ontario Driver's License, with a class G license or higher for a minimum of 2 years.
- Applications will be rejected if the applicant has 7 or more demerit points on their license in the past 3 years.

Complexity/Problem Solving

- Possesses knowledge of the Strathroy-Caradoc area and types of buildings within the Municipality.
- Ability to get along well with others in a team environment.

Mental, Physical, and Dexterity Efforts

- Must pass a medical examination before becoming a member of the fire department and as required but the Director of Fire and Emergency Services.
- Must pass the physical assessment test for firefighters as set out from time to time by Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Department.
- Physical skills, stamina and effort to climb ladders, enter into restrictive or confined spaces and conduct other activities which may require some level of physical hazard to the health and safety of the individual.
- Carries out tasks requiring significant concentration on a variety of activities, some of which involve the assessment of a considerable number of options and occasionally require the use of complicated analytical methods.
- Exposure to outdoor elements, unpleasant but not hazardous chemicals, use of power tools, unhygienic and related conditions.
- Ability to perform tasks that require accurate co-ordination of fine movements, where speed is a secondary consideration.
