Job Summary The Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (MDRT) provides essential support to surgeons, anesthesiologists, and clinical teams through the safe and effective reprocessing of surgical instruments, medical devices, and procedural equipment at River Cree Weiss Surgical (RCW).

The MDRT is responsible for all stages of medical device reprocessing including decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of instruments and supplies in accordance with established standards, evidence-based guidelines, and facility policies.

The role also supports operating room readiness, case cart preparation, and efficient patient flow through timely instrumentation turnover and environmental support activities.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Medical Device Reprocessing

- Perform thorough decontamination of reusable medical devices utilizing validated processes such as pre-cleaning, enzymatic soaking, ultrasonic cleaning, and automated washer disinfector cycles as indicated, ensuring instruments are secure for inspection, assembly, and sterilization.
- Utilize a borescope to inspect lumened and cannulated instruments for cleanliness, integrity, and residual debris in accordance with manufacturer instructions for use (IFU) and RCW reprocessing standards.
- Clean, inspect, assemble, package, sterilize, and store surgical instruments and medical devices according to RCW standards, manufacturer IFU, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Perform all reprocessing functions including decontamination, manual and mechanical cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and sterile storage.
- Ensure appropriate selection and use of detergents, disinfectants, and sterilization processes.
- Monitor and document chemical, biological, and physical sterilization parameters to ensure effectiveness of sterilization cycles.
- Maintain accurate and complete sterilization and reprocessing records.

Instrumentation & Case Cart Preparation

- Pick required surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment from the Rotomat system and designated supply storage areas to prepare case carts according to procedural pick lists.
- Utilize the Surgical Instrument Tracking System (SPM) for instrument tracking, documentation, set assembly verification, and traceability.
- Ensure timely preparation and turnover of instrumentation to support scheduled surgical cases.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, function, and integrity prior to distribution.

Equipment & Work Area Maintenance





- Clean and maintain reprocessing equipment including washers, ultrasonic cleaners, sterilizers, and work surfaces.
- Ensure proper environmental cleaning and organization of the Medical Device Reprocessing area.
- Report equipment malfunctions, failed sterilization indicators, or safety concerns promptly to the MDR Team Lead.

Supply Handling & Inventory Support

- Receive, verify, and stock surgical and operational supplies in appropriate storage locations.
- Assist with rotation of stock to prevent expiry and ensure availability of required items.
- Support linen handling and laundry processes as assigned.

Patient Interaction & Professional Conduct

- Interacts with patients and families in a respectful, culturally sensitive manner consistent with RCW’s commitment to safe and inclusive care.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and professionalism at all times.

Safety, Quality & Regulatory Compliance

- Adhere to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) standards including aseptic technique and safe handling of contaminated devices.
- Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
- Identify and report hazards, equipment concerns, or process deviations.
- Participate in quality assurance activities, competency validation, and mock emergency drills as required.
- Promptly report and escalate sterilization process failures or reprocessing equipment malfunctions to the MDR Team Lead, ensuring affected instruments are quarantined and reprocessing deviation protocols are initiated in accordance with RCW policy.
- Comply with all applicable RCW policies and regulatory requirements governing medical device reprocessing.

Position Requirements

- High school diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent, including GED, or demonstrated equivalent experience.
- Successful completion of a recognized Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (MDRT) Certification Program. Candidates currently enrolled in a recognized MDRT certification program may be considered.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Knowledge of perioperative environment, anesthesia workflow, and surgical instrumentation, with the ability to apply this knowledge in the reprocessing environment.
- Comprehensive working knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, sterile storage, and distribution principles.




- Knowledge of infection prevention and aseptic technique practices.
- Able to prepare surgical instrumentation accurately in accordance with established standards and manufacturer instructions.
- Able to organize and prioritize instrumentation tasks to support timely case preparation during active surgical days.
- Aware of workplace hazards and proficient in the proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Able to perform the physical functions of this role including sustained standing, manual handling of instruments and equipment, and movement through the reprocessing and surgical areas. WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT

- Must be able to perform the physical functions of this role including moderate to strenuous activity, prolonged standing, walking, bending, and lifting.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
- You may be required to work days, evenings and weekends.

- A competitive hourly wage will be offered to the successful candidate based on experience and skills. At the end of the probationary period/waiting period a comprehensive benefit and insurance package will be provided to full time and part time employees.
