Job Summary

The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing the company’s financial operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, and supporting strategic financial planning. In our growing biotech startup, this role combines hands-on accounting with financial oversight and will work closely with executive leadership to support informed business decisions.

Key Responsibilities

- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activities.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
- Manage month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Develop, implement, and maintain financial controls and accounting policies.
- Monitor cash flow, budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance.
- Support annual budgeting and long-range financial planning.
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and reporting requirements.
- Prepare financial reports and analyses for senior leadership and investors.




- Support grant reporting and tracking of research funding where applicable.
- Assist with financial due diligence for fundraising, partnerships, and audits.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial systems and business processes.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA designation (or actively pursuing) preferred.
- 5+ years of accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards and financial reporting.
- Experience with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred

- Experience in biotechnology, life sciences, healthcare, or startup environments.
- Experience managing government grants or research funding.
- Familiarity with investor reporting and financial modeling.

Working conditions:

- Physical Requirements: N/A
- Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week. Flexible start time between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM.
- Work Environment: On-site at Qeen's head office. Free parking available.
