Personal Trainer / Strength & Conditioning Coach / Kinesiologist

26.5+ Established Hours/Week | Pathway to Full-Time
Performance Institute

Performance Institute is looking for an experienced, career-minded Personal Trainer / Strength & Conditioning Coach/Kinesiologist to join our coaching team.

This is an opportunity for someone looking for more than a handful of personal training hours or the pressure of having to build a clientele from scratch. The position begins with approximately 26.5 established scheduled hours per week, with additional opportunities for the right candidate to build toward a full-time role through personal training, assessments, Active Rehabilitation and additional coaching responsibilities.

For a Registered BCAK Practising Kinesiologist, an additional 6–8 hours on Wednesday may also be available, bringing the established schedule closer to 32.5–34.5 hours per week before additional PT and coverage opportunities.

About Performance Institute

This is not a typical commercial-gym personal training position.

For more than 25 years, Performance Institute has worked with a remarkably diverse clientele—from youth athletes and everyday adults to clients in their 70s and 80s, national-level wheelchair athletes, elite Canadian figure skaters, professional athletes and actors. Our past and current clientele have included members of the Vancouver Whitecaps and actors such as Hugh Jackman, Amanda Peet, David Duchovny and Zac Efron.

Our trainers work in a dynamic, collaborative and supportive environment, delivering individualized semi-private training, one-on-one personal training and specialized services.

Regardless of whether they're coaching an elite athlete or an older adult who wants to stay strong and independent, we expect the same attention to detail, quality of coaching and commitment to the individual.

We're looking for someone who loves coaching, connects naturally with people and wants to become an important part of an established training team.

Your Established Schedule

The core schedule for this position is:

- Monday: 5:45 AM–1:00 PM
- Tuesday: 7:00 AM–1:00 PM
- Thursday: 7:00 AM–1:00 PM
- Friday: 5:45 AM–1:00 PM

This represents approximately 26.5 scheduled hours per week.

For a Registered BCAK Practising Kinesiologist, approximately 6–8 additional Wednesday hours may also be available, depending on qualifications and fit.

Looking for Full-Time?

For the right candidate, we would like this position to grow into a full-time coaching role.

Additional hours may come through:

- One-on-one personal training
- New-client assessments
- Active Rehabilitation for qualified Kinesiologists
- Additional semi-private coaching
- Vacation and staff coverage
- Specialized programs and team training

Importantly, we are not looking for someone to spend their day cold calling, prospecting or trying to sell gym memberships.

We are looking for someone who is personable, confident and engaging—someone who can build rapport with a new client during an assessment or first training session, understand what that person needs, and make them want to continue working with you.

If you're a technically strong coach who also genuinely enjoys people, there is significant potential to grow this position.

What Training at PI Looks Like

Much of our training is delivered through individualized semi-private training. These are not traditional group fitness classes where everyone follows the same workout.

Clients follow individualized programs based on their goals, abilities, injury history and training experience, while the trainer coaches multiple clients simultaneously.

Our trainers may also work with:

- One-on-one personal training clients
- Youth and adult athletes
- Active Rehabilitation clients, depending on qualifications
- Fitness assessments
- Remote/online clients
- Team training and specialized programs

The successful candidate needs to be comfortable managing a busy training floor while still providing excellent individual coaching, exercise instruction and client interaction.

Qualifications & ExperienceRequired

- Bachelor's Degree (completed or in progress) in Kinesiology, Human Kinetics, Sport Science or a related field
- Experience training a variety of clientele
- Current CPR/First Aid certification
- Liability insurance

Highly Preferred

- Registered BCAK Practising Kinesiologist or eligible for BCAK registration
- Experience conducting client assessments
- Experience working with rehabilitation or return-to-activity clients

BCAK registration is particularly valuable for this position because it may open up additional Wednesday hours and Active Rehabilitation responsibilities.

The Person We're Looking For

Technical coaching ability matters at PI—but so does the ability to connect with people.

The right person will:

- Be warm, confident and engaging with new and existing clients
- Be able to build rapport quickly without coming across as a salesperson
- Communicate exercise instruction, goals and expectations clearly
- Be comfortable conducting or learning to conduct assessments
- Confidently coach clients with different goals, abilities and individualized programs simultaneously
- Identify movement inefficiencies and apply appropriate corrective strategies
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Have excellent attention to exercise technique and detail
- Be dependable—particularly for early-morning shifts
- Work collaboratively with other trainers and administrative staff
- Remain professional in complex or stressful situations
- Be interested in continuing to learn and develop as a coach

Additional assets include CSCS certification, previous athletic experience, marketing experience and specialized coaching skills such as Olympic lifting, Yoga or Spinning.

Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office, software navigation and data entry, are also required.

Compensation

$24–$45/hour plus eligible bonuses, depending on qualifications, experience and responsibilities.

Unlike many personal-training positions,

this is not a role where you are expected to spend unpaid hours at the gym waiting to build a client roster. Scheduled working hours are paid.

Our compensation structure recognizes both scheduled coaching time and the additional responsibility associated with delivering training sessions.

There is opportunity for increased responsibility and earnings as you develop your role within PI, particularly through personal training, assessments and Active Rehabilitation for appropriately qualified Kinesiologists.

Benefits & Perks

- Supplements available at cost
- Friends & family discounts
- Complimentary facility use and group training sessions when not on shift
- Performance reviews at 6 months and annually
- Extended health benefits available after a 12-month probationary period for trainers working 20+ hours/week
- PI will cover the cost of BCAK re-certification while you are employed with us
- Casual dress
- On-site gym
- On-site parking
- Store discount

Working Conditions

- Clean, air-conditioned gym environment
- Compliance with all health and safety protocols
- Physical demands include standing/walking for extended periods and demonstrating exercises
- Comfortable working with gym equipment and machinery

Why Work at Performance Institute?

Performance Institute has been serving clients for more than 25 years, and many of our clients have trained with us for years.

We're a small coaching team, which means reliability matters—but it also means you aren't just another trainer on a large gym floor.

For the right person, this is an opportunity to step into a substantial existing schedule, become part of an established coaching team, develop relationships with a diverse client base, and potentially grow into a full-time career at PI without having to build a business from scratch.

If you are passionate about fitness, rehabilitation and helping people achieve their goals—and you're the kind of coach people naturally enjoy working with—we'd love to hear from you.
