Skilled Trades Ontario (STO) is a Crown agency responsible for skilled trades

certification in Ontario, which includes:

- Establishing apprenticeship programs, including training standards, curriculum

standards and certification exams.

- Administering apprenticeship programs, including approving apprentices and

sponsors, registering training agreements and assessing applications for

apprenticeship program completion.

- Issuing certificates of apprenticeship to completed Ontario apprentices.

- Assessing experience and qualifications of individuals who have not completed

an apprenticeship program in Ontario.

- Administering exams, including certifying exams, in all trades subject to

certifying exams.

- Issuing Certificates of Qualification in all trades with certifying exams.

- Renewing Certificates of Qualification in compulsory trades.

- Maintaining a Public Register of people authorized to work in compulsory

trades.

- Researching apprenticeships and the trades.

Skilled Trades Ontario is seeking a strategic and collaborative communications leader to

serve as Manager, Corporate Communications.

Reporting to the Director, Strategic Relations and Public Affairs, the Manager will lead the

planning, coordination and delivery of corporate communications initiatives that advance

STO's mandate, reputation, and organizational priorities. The successful candidate will

provide strategic communications advice to senior leaders, oversee integrated

communications planning, support executive and stakeholder communications, and lead

a high-performing communications team.

This role requires a seasoned communications professional who can translate complex

business priorities into effective communications strategies, build strong relationships

across the organization, manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced workplace, and

provide sound judgment on sensitive or high-profile issues.

Responsibilities:

- Provide strategic communications support to senior leadership,



applying sound

judgment and critical thinking to develop communications approaches, messaging

and materials that advance organizational priorities and address emerging issues.

- Support executive communications, stakeholder engagement and Board-related

initiatives by developing communications materials, contributing to planning

activities and providing informed communications recommendations.

- Monitor emerging issues and organizational risks and develop communications

recommendations, messaging and approaches to support effective decision-

making and reputation management.

- Develop and implement integrated communications strategies and plans that

support STO's strategic priorities and foster alignment across the organization.

- Lead internal communications planning and execution to support organizational

priorities, employee engagement initiatives, change management activities, and a

strong organizational culture.

- Oversee STO's digital communications channels, including social media and

website content, and support proactive and reactive media relations activities,

including media inquiries, interview coordination and spokesperson preparation.

- Lead, coach and develop communications staff while fostering a collaborative,

accountable and high-performing team environment; establish work priorities,

allocate resources and oversee the successful implementation of communications

projects and initiatives.

- Develop communications processes, tools and performance measures, and

monitor results using data, analytics and audience insights to support continuous

improvement and effective service delivery.

Qualifications:

- A post-secondary degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public

relations or a related field.

- A minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in communications and/or media

relations, including demonstrated successful experience working with the media

and experience in strategic communications, marketing and issues management.





- Experience identifying resource requirements, budgets, as well as developing

action plans, campaigns, initiatives, events and managing the successful

implementation of these strategies.

- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, think critically and provide

practical communications recommendations on complex, sensitive or emerging

issues.

- Project management skills to plan, manage and execute strategies and undertake

post-strategy evaluations and to manage external service providers and vendors.

- Experience managing, coaching and developing staff, including establishing

priorities, providing performance feedback and fostering accountability, preferably

within a unionized environment.

- Excellent verbal and written communications skills and interpersonal skills

including tact and diplomacy.

- Knowledge of communications, stakeholder engagement, media relations and

government relations approaches and best practices.

- Highly developed political acuity.

- Skilled trades-related experience would be considered an asset.
