Turning Point Society of Central Alberta has been contributing to healthier, safer communities for all through the agency’s service in Red Deer and Central Alberta for 35 years. Turning Point is a progressive, non-profit organization actively engaged in changing the conversation surrounding vulnerable populations including those experiencing homelessness, substance use, sexually transmitted and blood borne infections (STBBIs). As a team member, you will gain knowledge in the following areas: comprehensive sexual health education and supports, gender based violence, HIV, hepatitis C, and other STBBIs; substance use; opioid poisoning prevention and response, including naloxone; full spectrum recovery oriented care for mental illnesses, including substance use disorders, with a focus on harm reduction; people experiencing homelessness; people engaged in sex work; 2SLGBTQIA+ focused supports; and other vulnerable populations. Position Title: Outreach Worker

Reports to: Team Lead

Hours of Work: 18 hours weekly, possibility of full time

Employment type: Part time, one year contract

Job Purpose: To contribute to the work of the multi-disciplinary team in promoting respect and dignity for all through education and support relating to gender based violence, especially as it pertains to intersecting vulnerabilities and marginalizations of priority populations including women and gender diverse individuals.

Actively promoting Turning Point as a resource for vulnerable people who have/are experiencing gender based violence, and who are street involved, those who use substances, those that are experiencing housing instability and other vulnerabilties, an or those experiencing barriers to accessing supports in traditional pathways. The Safe Point Outreach Worker provides holistic violence prevention services and wrap-around services, while supporting the Licenced Practical Nurse/Case Manager of the Program. Work in responding to the target population's specific related issues includes:

- Provide education, resources and capacity building tools to those at risk of, or who have/are experiencing gender based violence. Gender based violence includes: abuse/harassment, sexual and other forms of physical violence, emotional/pyschological violence and other forms as it pertains to a person's gender or percieved gender.




- Provide relevant support and resources for justice system engagement for victims of gender based violence.
- Provide working knowledge of women's, queer, transgender and gender diverse supports in community
- Safety information related to sexual and/or substance use risks (i.e. STBBI transmission prevention, overdose prevention, )
- Develop/maintain trusting, caring, non-judgmental and supportive relationships with individuals accessing Turning Point services
- Attend agency events, representing the program to provide community education for prevention and advocacy
- Encourage and support justice system pathways for victims to increase access
- Systems navigation support
- Psycho-social support
- Facilitate linkage to health and social services
- Provide relevant health information based on individual need
- Support safety planning for at risk individuals
- Provide impeccable confidentiality and privacy protection as it relates to sensitive information, data management and person's who at risk
- Coordinate, attend and occasionally transport clients to legal appointments, providing emotional support alongside the Licenced Practical Nurse.
- System navigation support, referrals and warm handoffs

General Duties

- Contribute to the work of the multi-disciplinary team
- Participate in staff meetings
- Supervise students, contractors or volunteers as identified
- Adhere to established goals and objectives
- Support the participation of individuals affected by Gender based violence, STBBI’s, poverty, substance use, and all other types of services users in all aspects of Turning Point
- Maintain current knowledge and skills
- Cleaning, stocking and supplying designated areas
- Monitoring the space within office to ensure safety of services users, staff, volunteers, and community members
- Responding to emergency situations as they arise
- Attend agency functions as required
- Other tasks as assigned by the Leadership Team
- Manage communications (calls, faxes and mail, etc.)




- Support other team members as time allows

Program Development, Evaluation and Reporting:

- Maintain program delivery records
- Participate in evaluation and reporting activities, including program planning that is evidence-based and locally relevant
- Projects related to funded activities
- Submit required reports to the Team Lead and Executive Director
- Meet regularly with supervisor for consultation and activity updates

Community

- Promote and facilitate the participation of target populations in regional, provincial and national activities
- Create awareness about Gender based violence and related issues in the community
- Teach interested people about and share accomplishments of Turning Point
- Collaborate on common activities

Qualifications

- A diploma or degree in social sciences, health or related field and/or combination of education and work experience is preferable
- Experience working with marginalized individuals, women, queer, and transgender communities
- Commitment to harm reduction principals
- Knowledge, experience or willingness to learn about substance use, substance use disorders, drug practice and culture, communicable diseases, sexual health, vulnerable populations, affected populations, mental health, and concurrent disorders
- Knowledge of community based resources and experience with systems navigation
- Flexibility, creativity, motivation, enthusiasm, and an inclusive and equitable non-judgmental attitude
- Ability to demonstrate self-awareness of own beliefs and biases
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team setting
- Valid CPR/First Aid
- Training in suicide intervention, non-violent crisis intervention, and FOIP is an asset
- Fluency in English and written communication skills
