Position Overview

Gobind Sarvar School is seeking a motivated, experienced, and visionary Junior High & High School Basketball Coach to lead, develop, and oversee our basketball program for students ages 12–18.

This position is well suited for an individual who is passionate about youth development and interested in building and growing a comprehensive school basketball program. The successful candidate will take an active leadership role in establishing the program, developing student-athletes, coordinating teams and competitions, and creating opportunities for continued growth and participation.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, effective communication, excellent organizational skills, and a commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court.

The position requires approximately 3–4 hours per day, with additional availability on weekends for games, tournaments, and related athletic activities.

Key ResponsibilitiesProgram Leadership & Development

- Lead, develop, and oversee the school’s Junior High & High School Basketball Program.
- Develop and implement a structured, sustainable, and age-appropriate basketball program for students ages 12–18.
- Establish program goals, standards, schedules, training plans, and development pathways.
- Identify opportunities to grow participation, competitiveness, and student engagement in basketball.
- Develop a positive program culture centered on leadership, discipline, teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the program and recommend improvements to school administration.

Coaching & Student Development

- Plan and lead practices, training sessions, games, tournaments,



and other basketball activities.
- Teach and develop basketball fundamentals, skills, game strategies, fitness, and teamwork.
- Adapt training and coaching approaches to accommodate varying skill levels and abilities.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to student-athletes and encourage personal growth, confidence, accountability, and leadership.
- Promote healthy lifestyles, physical fitness, sportsmanship, and fair play.
- Monitor and support student-athlete development both on and off the court.

Communication & Collaboration

- Maintain clear, professional, and effective communication with students, parents, school administration, and staff.
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding schedules, practices, games, tournaments, expectations, and student-athlete development.
- Coordinate effectively with school administration regarding program planning, scheduling, facilities, equipment, and events.
- Provide timely updates regarding team activities, program progress, and any relevant student concerns.
- Represent the school professionally when communicating with external athletic organizations, schools, and community partners.

Athletic Programming & Competitions

- Coordinate and support participation in School Sport Alberta programs, competitions, tournaments, and events, as applicable.
- Organize and oversee participation in league games, tournaments, and other competitive opportunities.
- Ensure that teams and program activities follow applicable school and athletic association requirements.
- Supervise students during practices, games, tournaments, travel, and other basketball-related activities.
- Be available to support weekend games, tournaments, and athletic events as required.

Qualifications & Experience

- Previous experience coaching basketball, preferably with junior high and/or high school students ages 12–18.
- Solid knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules,



strategies, player development, and coaching methodologies.
- Demonstrated leadership ability and experience managing or developing a sports program is considered an asset.
- Strong interest and demonstrated ability to build, develop, and grow a basketball program.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational, planning, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and administration.
- Ability to motivate and mentor young athletes while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Basketball coaching certification or relevant training is preferred.
- First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain.
- Familiarity with School Sport Alberta and school-based athletic programming is considered an asset.
- Availability to work weekends as required.

Schedule & Availability

- Approximately 3–4 hours per day.
- Schedule may vary depending on practices, games, tournaments, and school activities.
- Weekend availability is required for games, tournaments, and related athletic events.
- Flexibility to accommodate the school and athletic calendar is expected.

- Coaches are required to cover their heads with a bandana while on school property, including during practices, games, tournaments, field trips, and professional development activities.
- Coaches are required to bring vegetarian snacks and lunches only while on school premises and during school hours. Meat, eggs, and fish are not permitted.
- Coaches are expected to demonstrate professionalism, integrity, respect, leadership, and a commitment to student well-being.
- Coaches are expected to maintain a safe, inclusive, respectful, and supportive environment for all student-athletes.
- Coaches are expected to serve as positive role models and represent the school and its values appropriately at all times.
