Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society (VCDS) is looking for experienced professionals, executives and community leaders to join our volunteer Board of Directors and help shape what comes next for cancer patients who need assistance getting to and from their treatments.

VCDS provides complimentary transportation for cancer patients travelling to treatment and safely home again across Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

In 2025, our volunteer drivers provided more than 42,000 patient trips and travelled over 1.1 million kilometres. So far this year, demand is running more than 20% higher.

But behind every number is a person.

Someone who doesn’t have to worry about how they’re getting to treatment.

A family member with one less thing to worry about.

A patient who can focus on getting through the day instead of finding a ride.

That’s the impact we’re building on.

Why now?

VCDS is at an important point in its evolution. As demand continues to grow, we’re intentionally strengthening our Board with leaders who can help us anticipate future needs, broaden our relationships, strengthen our governance and build the organizational and financial capacity needed for the future.

We’re continuing our evolution toward an engaged governance Board, one that provides strategic leadership and oversight while serving as passionate ambassadors for VCDS in the community.

We’re looking for people who want to bring their experience, judgement, perspective and relationships to the table.

We have two priority Board opportunities, but our search is broader than these roles.

Board Director – Fund Development Strategy

We’re looking for a senior leader to provide Board-level leadership in shaping VCDS’s fund development strategy, revenue diversification and long-term financial sustainability.





As Canadian-registered charity, VCDS receives no core funding, and each year must raise just over $1 million to keep our volunteer drivers on the road.

This is an excellent chance to leverage your experience in philanthropy, major gifts, corporate partnerships, sponsorship, business development, fund development or strategic relationship-building The role focuses on strategy and relationships, identifying opportunities, strengthening our approach and using your experience and networks to help open doors to funders, sponsors, donors and community partners.

Operational execution remains with the organization; this Director provides strategic leadership and Board-level oversight.

Board Secretary – Governance

We’re looking for an experienced professional who understands the value of strong governance and can help support an effective, accountable and forward-looking Board.

The Secretary is a governance officer, not simply a minute-taking role.

This Director helps maintain the integrity and continuity of Board processes, decisions, and Board and governance records. They support the development of governance policies and the Board’s oversight of privacy and compliance matters, including CASL, while contributing fully to the strategic work of the Board.

Experience in governance, law, corporate secretarial practice, policy, risk, compliance, executive leadership or a related field would be particularly valuable.

What you’ll bring

You don’t need to bring everything. We’re interested in the depth of experience and perspective you can bring and how that complements the strengths of the Board as a whole.

We’re looking for people who can:

- Think strategically and look beyond today
- Ask thoughtful questions and constructively challenge ideas
- Bring independent perspective and sound judgement
- Build relationships and make meaningful introductions
- Use their professional and community networks to advance VCDS’s mission
- Work collaboratively while respecting the distinction between governance and operations
- Be visible and engaged ambassadors for VCDS
- Keep our patients, volunteers and mission at the centre of Board decisions





Board, executive or senior leadership experience is an asset. Previous nonprofit governance experience is welcomed, but we also value professionals ready to bring their career experience into meaningful Board service.

The commitment

These are volunteer Board positions. Directors serve three-year terms and are eligible for re-election.

Our Board currently meets virtually each month. As part of the evolution of our governance model, we’re moving toward six regular Board meetings per year, with two planned as in-person meetings, including our Annual General Meeting.

Our strategic plan is supported by four working groups, each aligned with one of VCDS’s four strategic pillars. The groups help the Board explore strategic priorities, bring forward recommendations and monitor progress against the strategic plan, while operational implementation remains with management.

Directors are expected to come prepared, participate actively, contribute their expertise and perspective, and serve as ambassadors for VCDS.

This is an engaged Board, we recognize that the people we hope to attract have significant professional and personal commitments. Our goal is to use Directors’ time and expertise where they can have the greatest impact.

These appointments are part of deliberate Board succession and organizational planning. New Directors will have time to learn VCDS, build relationships, contribute their expertise and help create leadership continuity across the Board.

We’re not simply filling Board seats. We’re building the Board VCDS will need for its next chapter.
