Role Responsibilities

Are you passionate about protecting Alberta’s parks while creating safe and enjoyable outdoor recreation experiences for visitors? The Park Ranger Supervisor plays a key role in the delivery of Park Ranger operations within assigned park areas. This position supports visitor management, public safety, compliance and education programming, natural and cultural resource protection, and operational service delivery to ensure Alberta's parks remain safe, sustainable, and welcoming for current and future generations. This position looks after the Spruce Grove District, including parks like Carson Pegasus Provincial Park, Fort Assiniboine Sandhills Wildland Provincial Park, Wolf Lake West Provincial Recreation Area, Minnow Lake Provincial Recreation Area, Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park and Big Island Provincial Park.

Responsibilities include:

- Supervising, mentoring, and supporting seasonal Park Rangers and volunteers, including work planning, training, coaching, and performance management activities.
- Supporting recruitment, onboarding, and training initiatives to ensure staff are equipped to deliver park operations and visitor services effectively.
- Delivering compliance and education programs that promote visitor awareness of park legislation, regulations, public safety practices, and responsible outdoor recreation.
- Responding to visitor inquiries, public complaints, and complex situations while utilizing sound judgement, conflict resolution, and customer service skills.
- Conducting field patrols and inspections in campgrounds, day-use areas, trails, and backcountry locations to monitor visitor use and support park operations.
- Supporting the protection and management of natural and cultural resources through visitor management activities, monitoring programs, and human-wildlife coexistence initiatives.
- Identifying and addressing operational issues, visitor concerns, and emerging risks while supporting effective program delivery across assigned park locations.
- Coordinating and supporting public safety programs, emergency response activities, emergency response planning, warnings and closures, and incident management activities.




- Building and maintaining positive relationships with visitors, Indigenous communities, volunteers, permit holders, facility operators, partner organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Monitoring activities conducted under permits and agreements to ensure compliance with applicable legislation, permit conditions, policies, and operational requirements.
- Preparing reports, maintaining records, completing administrative processes, and contributing to operational planning and program reporting activities.
- Promoting safe work practices and ensuring compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, policies, procedures, inspections, hazard assessments, and incident reporting requirements.

This position requires regular travel throughout assigned park areas and work in a variety of outdoor environments, including remote and backcountry locations. Travel may be by foot, bicycle, motor vehicle, or off-highway vehicle. Please click on this link to view the for this position.

Qualifications

Education and Experience required: A related two-year diploma (Natural Resources, Natural or Environmental Sciences, Recreation Management, Tourism Development, Criminal Justice, or other related) plus 3 years related experience (Park operations, visitor management, compliance monitoring, Natural Resources, Outdoor Recreation). Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Other requirements:

- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence.
- Supervisor experience
- Current Standard First Aid certification including CPR-C and AED.
- Able to work independently without direct supervision, with initiative to remain productive and support other park programs when needed.
- Ability to travel regularly within assigned park regions.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and remote locations.
- Ability to travel by foot, bicycle, motor vehicle, or off-highway vehicle as operationally required.

Assets: Preference may be given to candidates who have experience in one or more of the following:

- Knowledge of the Provincial Parks Acts and Regulations
- Knowledge of parks within the Spruce Grove District




- Conflict management/resolution experience/tactical communication
- Outdoor recreation competency (navigation skills, front country travel, working alone).
- Able to work and travel in various terrain and degrees of isolation in all weather conditions
- Familiar with Incident Command Systems (ICS)
- Knowledge on Alberta Flora and fauna
- Knowledge of Indigenous Culture
- Experience in communicating/presenting to staff, stakeholders, or the public.
- Customer Service experience
- Confidence in using Microsoft365
- Familiar with specialized devices and software (i.e., GPS, ArcGIS)
- Additional training certification (i.e. ATV, UTV, snowmobile, chainsaw, etc.)

- This is a full-time temporary position.
- The standard hours of work are 36.25 hours per week.
