Meet your New Team

Ontario's death investigation system is the largest in North America, overseeing ~20,000 investigations annually. The Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service work together to deliver coordinated, equitable investigations that reflect Ontario's diversity.

As the Regional Supervising Coroner for Ottawa and the Southeast Region, you will:

- Oversee investigations across the region, supported by a highly dedicated group of coroners who work closely with you.
- Work in Ottawa with a team of professionals who provide operational, administrative, and stakeholder support.
- Collaborate with a tight knit, supportive leadership team across the province that values diverse perspectives and shared problem solving.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

- A physician who is, or eligible to be, licensed and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Strategic Leadership Skills

- Demonstrated the leadership behaviours, attributes and mindsets for leaders, across the organization, to lead the OPS into the future and deliver our vision.
- Leadership, management, and administrative abilities to plan and coordinate consultative and investigative activities, and to direct the operations of a regional office.
- Commitment to inclusive leadership that embraces diversity and recognizes the importance of cultural safety in the context of death investigations.
- Judgment and political acuity required to navigate highly visible, complex, and sensitive issues.

Specialized Expertise

- Extensive medical experience complemented by the ability to collaborate with and manage other healthcare professionals.
- Investigative knowledge and skills in general and forensic investigation techniques, including an understanding of pathology, toxicology (e.g., drug reactions and toxicity), and industrial safety.
- Understanding and application of relevant legislation and guidelines related to death investigations and inquests (e.g., Coroners Act, Gift of Life Act, Anatomy Act, Vital Statistics Act, Funeral Burial and Cremation Services Act).

Communication and Relationship Management Skills

- Communication skills to interact effectively with the public, grieving families, media, and professional partners in a respectful and compassionate manner.
- Awareness of diverse service needs and the importance of delivering culturally responsive and inclusive services.
- Interpersonal and relationship-building skills to engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including communities, medical professionals, legal colleagues, and law enforcement.
