You own a portfolio of client files from A to Z. You plan and complete compilation, review, and tax engagements, review the work your team prepares before it reaches the partner, and you are the person your clients actually talk to — across the year, not only at the deadline.
You will carry your own book and review the accountants working on it. Portfolio size varies a lot with client size and complexity, so you'll run several year-ends and filing deadlines in parallel. Our clients are owner-managed private companies. You will handle their year-ends, corporate and personal returns, trust and partnership returns, and you will support them when a government audit lands.
This is a remote-first role, in practice about 99% remote. There is no fixed schedule or minimum number of days required in the office. However, occasional in-person meetings, client events, and on-site work are part of the role, which is why we are looking for someone based in the Greater Montreal area. You will remain actively involved in the files and client work throughout the year. This is a hands-on position, not an oversight-only role.
Must Have
- CPA designation
- 5+ years in public practice, at an accounting or CPA firm
- 3+ years reviewing or managing other accountants' work
- In-depth, hands-on experience with compilation engagements (Notice to Reader / CSRS 4200), review engagements (CSRE 2400), and tax — T1, T2, trust and partnership returns. Tax is in your day-to-day work, not occasional.
- Working knowledge of CaseWare, CCH iFirm, and QuickBooks Online
- Bilingual, French and English, at a professional working level — spoken and written. You will be client-facing in both. To be clear about the bar: you need to be able to run a client meeting, write a clear letter, and deal with a government auditor in either language. We are not screening for a perfect accent or native-level polish in both.
Nice to Have
- Experience at a small or boutique firm, where you carried the whole file rather than one function of it
- Experience in a private or private-enterprise group at a larger firm
- Owner-managed and family business clients
- GST/HST and QST (TPS/TVQ) filings
- Taxprep, DT Max, or Acomba
- ClickUp or similar project management tools
What Will You Do
- Manage a portfolio of clients while understanding their business, key risks, and ways to deliver added value
- Plan, schedule, and complete compilation, review, and tax engagements
- Review your team's files before they go to the partner, for logic as well as accuracy
- Prepare and review year-ends, corporate and personal tax returns, trust and partnership returns
- Stay in contact with your clients across the year, not only at deadlines
- Support clients through government audits and communicate with government agencies
- Lead client-facing interactions to complete engagements, including delays and bad news
- Train and mentor the accountants on your files, and follow up on the feedback you give
What the job actually looks like
- Busy season is the most demanding period of the year. It runs from roughly February through the end of June, and it is predictable — we plan for it rather than pretending it does not exist.
- You get real ownership rapid. Once you are through onboarding, you run your own clients and report to the partner on them directly. That is the upside and the expectation.
- You will be reviewing files daily, not once a week.
- Some of our processes are mature, and others are still being built. When you hit a gap, we expect you to help close it.
This role is not for you if
- You want to move in-house, into industry, or into an internal or corporate department. This is client-facing firm work.
- Your experience is primarily statutory or CAS-based audit of public companies. We have one or two audits. It is not the work here.
- Your experience is purely tax, with no exposure to compilation and review engagements.
- You want to step back from hands-on work and only review, or you would rather avoid the difficult client conversation.
