What you’ll do

- We are seeking an experienced Maintenance and Operations Manager with the ability to supervise and provide technical direction to staff engaged in the operation and maintenance of a thermal generating station. With a background in power engineering, you will be able to assess technical problems, address potential hazards, and make timely decisions to ensure the safety of staff, the plant and the environment. As part of the Vancouver Island, Thermal, and Non-Integrated Region within Stations Field Operations, this position will be based out of the Island Generation facility, located on northern Vancouver Island. Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Thermal Maintenance and Operations Manager will directly manage up to 10 unionized Operations and Maintenance staff. The position is headquartered in Campbell River, a beautiful community with small-city amenities and exceptional access to outdoor recreation.
- Lead daily operations, ensuring coordination of safe work practices for employees and contractors.
- Lead resolution to a variety of challenging issues related to operations and maintenance constraints, and the technical complexity of plant equipment.
- Actively manage emergency response activities and consult with specialists and peers in the resolution of critical and unusual matters.
- Manage the training, authorizations, performance, and safety of staff and contractors.
- Implement safety programs, practices and investigation of incidents.
- Ensure compliance with Plant Operating Instructions and permits.




- Provide supervision and mentoring to Operations Power Engineering staff with the goal of developing and maintaining a competent, energetic and engaged team.
- Plan and implement the maintenance program for the plant, demonstrating a good understanding of CMMS systems and how work flows.
- Coordinate work and resources for scheduled maintenance outages.
- Assist the Plant Manager in the development of budgets and cost controls.
- Ensure adequate inventory of chemicals, consumables, tools, and materials.
- Recruit staff as required and ensure accurate administration of the governing Collective Agreement.
- Assist the Plant Manager in the development of employee succession planning.
- Implement appropriate contracts for services and supplies.
- Prepare reports, including those required of regulatory bodies.
- Prepare operating procedures.
- Ensure plant environmental management system compliance.
- Provide relief for the Plant Manager and maintain availability for after-hours calls/responses.
- Manage contractors engaged in undertaking and completing various work programs and projects.
- Contribute to plans, strategies, programs and standards for maintenance, safety, environment, community and indigenous relations.

What you bring

- First Class Power Engineering Certification preferred; minimum of BC or Interprovincial 2nd Class Power Engineer Certificate and actively working on achievement of 1st Class Power Engineering Certificate may be considered.




- Minimum of 10 years of experience performing operations and maintenance activities for a large industrial organization with at least 7 years involved in managing crews and/or projects in a unionized environment.
- A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain your Drivers' License: Class 5

What else you should know

- This position is headquartered in Campbell River, BC, but travel to other locations may be required periodically.
- The work setting is heavy industrial indoors and outdoors, where PPE is required to be worn.
