BC Hydro is seeking a Senior Electrical & Automation Engineer to join the Non-Integrated Areas (NIA) Planning & Strategy team based out of the Edmonds office in Burnaby. The NIA team is responsible for generation planning and asset management across 14 isolated microgrids serving primarily Indigenous communities. The portfolio includes 17 diesel generating stations and a run-of-river hydro facility, with battery energy storage and advanced microgrid control systems being introduced across the network.This role will provide senior technical expertise across electrical, automation, protection and control systems, supporting both ongoing operations and future capital projects.Key Responsibilities
Act as Professional of Record or Owner’s Engineer for electrical, automation, protection and control disciplinesProvide technical support for diesel generation, hydro generation and battery energy storage systemsDesign, program, troubleshoot and commission PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, protection relays, IEDs and microgrid controllersWork with systems from Allen Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, SEL and WonderwareSupport generator controls, governors, instrumentation, switchgear, protection and communications systemsPrepare technical documentation including specifications, control narratives, drawings, test procedures,



commissioning procedures and operating/maintenance documentationWitness factory acceptance testing and oversee site installation and commissioningWork with electrical maintenance crews and technologists on repairs and re-commissioning of protection, control and automation equipmentSupport capital and maintenance planningIdentify and resolve complex technical and field engineering issuesProvide technical guidance to engineering teams, operations and senior managementUse Microsoft Copilot and other AI tools to improve efficiency and innovationQualifications
Degree in Electrical EngineeringP.Eng. registered with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC) or another provinceMinimum 8 years of relevant engineering experienceStrong technical knowledge of diesel and hydro-electric generationExperience with PLC/HMI/SCADA/IED systems, preferably Allen Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, SEL and/or WonderwareFamiliarity with CAD systems, engineering drawings and industry design/analysis softwareStrong written and verbal communication skillsStrong organizational, interpersonal and conflict-resolution skillsAbility to work effectively with field crews, engineering teams and senior managementExperience using Artificial Intelligence toolsAdditional Requirements
Must have access to a sole practitioner or firm Permit to Practice with EGBC prior to starting the assignmentWork will be completed under BC Hydro’s Skilled Practice Management Plan and Quality Management requirementsFamiliarity with digital signing and sealing technology is an asset
