The City of Miramichi is now taking applications for multiple Part-Time Firefighter positions. This posting will be used to create a one-year eligibility list for future use.

Position Title: Part-time Firefighter

Position Type: Part-time

Position Summary:

The primary purpose of the Part-Time Firefighter position is to provide qualified staffing support that ensures the continued delivery of effective fire and emergency services within the City of Miramichi. Part time Firefighters may be scheduled or called upon to provide operational coverage for vacation relief, sick leave, training, statutory holidays, approved leaves, and other staffing requirements as needed to maintain service levels.

Reporting to the Shift Officer or Designate, as a Part-time Firefighter you will play a critical role in protecting the lives and property within the city of Miramichi. Part-time Firefighters respond to fires, rescues, medical emergencies, accidents, and other urgent incidents requiring rapid, effective, and safety‑focused action and support. Part-time Firefighters operate in high‑risk environments and must be prepared to make sound, decisive decisions in challenging environments when immediate action is required.

In addition to emergency response duties, Part-time Firefighters will be responsible for the routine maintenance of departmental vehicles, equipment, and facilities while always ensuring operational readiness. The successful candidates will be committed to

exercising strong judgment, ongoing training, efficiency, teamwork, professionalism and public service.

Responsibilities:

- Respond to emergency calls, lays and connects hose, holds nozzles and directs water streams, raises and climbs ladders, uses extinguishers and other equipment.
- Provide support to search and rescue in various forms.




- Drive and operating firefighting and emergency equipment.
- Provide first responder actions to hazardous materials calls.
- Conduct fire prevention inspections and public education programs.
- Complete incident reports and maintains vital incident information for investigative and record keeping purposes.
- Attend on duty training sessions and off-site training courses.
- Maintain fire equipment.
- Ventilate buildings to release heat, smoke and gases and places salvage covers to prevent water damage.
- Receive and record telephone fire alarms and other emergency calls plus assist in dispatching proper apparatus and equipment.
- Attend to Fire Prevention work, under the direction of an officer, performs inspections and clerical duties as required.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

- Completion of NFPA 1001 Firefighter Levels 1 & 2 (IFSAC or Pro Board Accredited)
- NFPA 1002 Driver/Operator chapter 4 & 5 (Engine) an asset
- NFPA 1002 Driver/Operator chapter 4 & 6 (Aerial) an asset
- Grade 12 education certificate or equivalent
- Ability to understand and communicate clearly in English (oral and written)
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C certificates
- NB Class 3E (air brakes)

Process

Candidates selected to move forward will be required to successfully complete the following:





- Written exam based on firefighting theory and tactics
- Practical skills assessment
- Complete medical including vision and hearing tests
- Complete physical assessment equivalent to the York test (physical fitness testing will be provided in Miramichi which will include VO2 Max)
- Predictive Index Behavioural Assessment
- Integrity Interview
- Panel Interview

Rate of Pay: $31.42 per hour;

Wages and benefits are provided with accordance with International Association of Firefighters Collective (IAFF) Agreement Local 5087.
