About Building Up
Building Up is Canada’s largest construction social enterprise. We leverage construction contracts and a comprehensive pre-apprenticeship program to provide a combination of in-class training and on-site renovations experience for community members ready to launch meaningful careers in the trades. Since 2016, we have worked with and empowered nearly 1000 participants, with 85% transitioning into long-term careers. We are also a leading contractor in the GTA for residential and commercial renovation projects, deep green energy retrofit projects and modular housing (Tiny Homes).
We are a collaborative team of ~40 that is growing quickly. Our culture is led by four core beliefs: Human Potential, Equity and Community, Respect and an Entrepreneurial Spirit.
Job Overview
Are you a carpenter who's great with a computer and loves keeping things organized? Building Up is hiring a Project Coordinator for our General Contracting division. You'll keep our construction projects running smoothly behind the scenes so our Project Managers can focus on leading their jobs.
This is a hybrid role that's part office and part field. One day you're building bid packages and entering costs in Buildertrend. The next you're setting up a current site, running a safety inspection, or getting the tool inventory in order. Your trades background matters here: you'll know what a crew needs to start work, what a site should look like, and when a drawing doesn't add up.
Responsibilities
Project management support
- Build scopes of work and draft bid packages, follow up with sub-trades for quotes, and keep vendor records current (WSIB, insurance, contacts).
- Support material orders and make sure they're placed and delivered on time.
- Manage project documents in Buildertrend, including permits, inspections, drawings, selections and change tracking.
- Take and send meeting minutes, and prepare draft close-out packages and warranty letters.
- Enter material, labour and PM costs in Buildertrend every week and reconcile them against Xero.
- Manage some smaller projects yourself.
Site support - Most days here will start at 6:30am and go until 2:30pm, so everyone has what they need when the site starts.
- Coordinate site setup, including washrooms, bins, storage, printed site binders and the tools and materials crews need on day one.
- Lead mobilization and demobilization, including booking trucks and transporting equipment and materials.
- Join weekly crew lead and PM meetings to plan materials, tools and equipment for the week ahead.
- Once in a while you may need to jump in to help out on site.
Health and safety
- Submit the Notice of Project to the Ministry of Labour and make sure all H&S; documentation is in place before day one.
- Do bi-weekly site inspections (PPE, safety boards, MSDS), check that daily toolbox talks are happening, and escalate any failed inspections.
Tools and inventory
- Lead the rollout of our Milwaukee ONE-KEY tool tracking system, and set clear tool expectations for trainees, lead hands and supervisors.
- Reorganize and maintain our storage locker, and make sure tools get serviced when they need it.
Requirements - What you bring
- Hands-on carpentry or residential construction experience.
- Strong computer skills. You're comfortable with spreadsheets, email and cloud software, and you pick up new platforms quickly. Experience with Buildertrend, Xero or ONE-KEY is an asset.
- Excellent organizational skills. You keep track of details, deadlines and follow-ups without being reminded.
- Clear, professional communication with subs, vendors, supervisors and clients.
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks efficiently
- Ability to manage project schedules proactively while adapting to changing priorities
- Working knowledge of Ontario construction health and safety. Working at Heights and WHMIS training are assets.
- A valid Ontario G driver's licence and a clean driving record.
- Must own a vehicle, access to a truck and your own tools are an asset
- You can lift and move materials and equipment and work on active job sites.
Other Technical Skills
- Proficiency in blueprint reading and interpreting technical schematics for various construction disciplines
- Ability to read and understand schematics for electrical, mechanical, or structural system
- Strong experience with construction estimating processes, techniques and cost control measures
- Expertise in construction management software including BuilderTrend, Bluebeam, and SketchUp (or similar platforms)
Pay: $65,000.00-$85,000.00 per year
Perks:
- Dental care
- Employee assistance program
