Fundraising and Development Lead (volunteer)

Help us build the fundraising function behind Black Eco Bloom's next chapter.

Position overview :

● Location: Remote - Canada-based.

● Type : Volunteer

● Time commitment: Approximately 5 hours/week, with flexibility up to 7 hours during busy fundraising periods

● Term: 8-month, with possibility of extension

About Black Eco Bloom (BEB)

Black Eco Bloom is a trailblazing sustainable development organization dedicated to empowering Black women and gender-diverse individuals in the environmental sector in Canada. We provide a nurturing space for leadership development, aiming to cultivate a diverse and inclusive environmental and climate sector while raising awareness on the impacts of climate change on Black communities.

Our work spans community training, community climate preparation and community connections, with the goal of strengthening Black leadership while helping shift environmental and climate spaces to better reflect Black voices, experiences, and needs.

Opportunity Overview

Black Eco Bloom is entering an important period of growth, and we are looking for someone who gets excited about the question: what would it take to build a strong, creative and sustainable fundraising function for an organization like ours?

This opportunity is for someone who can help us think strategically about where our funding should come from, build relationships with people and institutions who may want to invest in our work, identify opportunities, strengthen applications, explore community-based fundraising, and turn good ideas into actual fundraising activity.

Some weeks might involve researching a foundation and helping shape an application. Others might involve preparing for a conversation with a prospective funder, thinking through a donor campaign with our communications team, or helping us decide which opportunities are worth pursuing in the first place.

You would be joining a small organization where your ideas can genuinely shape how this area of our work develops. You will work directly with organizational leadership, have visibility into BEB's programs and organizational priorities, and have space to influence how our fundraising and development work takes shape.

We also want someone who enjoys being part of the team. BEB is fully remote, collaborative and growing, and we want this person to build relationships internally as much as externally.

What you would help us build

- Fundraising strategy and direction a. Work with leadership to develop a practical fundraising and development strategy that reflects our programs, values, growth plans, and actual capacity.

b. Help us think through the right mix of foundation funding, grants, philanthropic relationships,



individual giving, community fundraising, partnerships and other appropriate revenue opportunities.

- Funding opportunities and applications a. Research foundations, grant programs, and other prospective funding opportunities that align with BEB's work.

b. Maintain a prioritized funding pipeline that helps the team see upcoming opportunities, deadlines, relationship status, and next steps.

c. Support the development of strong funding applications, proposals, letters of inquiry, and related materials in collaboration with leadership and relevant program staff.

- Funder and donor relationships a. Build relationships with prospective and existing funders and, as familiarity with BEB develops, represent the organization alongside leadership in selected conversations with funders, donors, and philanthropic partners.

b. Support preparation for funder meetings, including research, briefing materials, relationship strategy and follow-up.

c. Help develop approaches to make our fundraising relational.

d. Help translate BEB's programs and ambitions into compelling, accurate funder-facing narratives.

- Community and individual giving a. Explore ways for people who believe in BEB's work to financially support it.

b. Work with leadership and communications to develop creative, values-aligned approaches to individual giving, fundraising campaigns, and audience engagement.

c. Help us assess community fundraising opportunities that make sense for BEB at this stage of our growth.

- Fundraising systems a. Help establish easy systems that make fundraising easier to manage over time, including prospect tracking, application calendars, relationship notes, templates and other tools.

Skills & Knowledge We’re Looking For

● Have experience in one or more areas such as fundraising, philanthropy, grant development, nonprofit development, donor relations, partnerships, sponsorship or resource mobilization.

● Can move comfortably between strategy and execution. You enjoy asking the big questions, but you are also willing to work through the application.

● Are a strong writer and communicator who can make a compelling case.

● Are comfortable building professional relationships and can represent an organization warmly and confidently with funders, donors and partners.

● Enjoy collaborating.



This role will work closely with leadership, communications and program team members.

● Bring curiosity, initiative, and good judgment. BEB is growing, so we value people who can help build the answer.

● Understand, or are genuinely interested in learning about, environmental justice, Black feminist leadership, intersectionality, and the barriers Black women and gender diverse people experience within environmental spaces.

● French/English bilingualism is a strong asset, particularly given BEB's national work, but is not required.

You do not need to check every box!

We are particularly interested in people who bring strong transferable skills, relationships, lived experience or knowledge that could strengthen this work.

You might be an experienced fundraising professional looking for a meaningful way to contribute your expertise. You might work in philanthropy and want to better understand the nonprofit side of funding. You might be earlier in your development career and looking for the opportunity to take meaningful ownership of strategy and relationship-building.

What matters most is that you can contribute thoughtfully, collaborate well, follow through and believe in what Black Eco Bloom is building.

Compensation

This is currently a volunteer position. As BEB grows its organizational resources and fundraising capacity, the scope of our development work may evolve, including the possibility of future paid capacity. We want to be transparent that this position does not guarantee future employment or a paid role.
