The Health & Safety Advisor plays a pivotal role in supporting regional operations and division managers to achieve established Health & Safety objectives across Irwin's Safety's diverse operational portfolio. This position provides expert guidance and practical support in the effective implementation and utilization of Irwin's H&S; Governance Framework, ensuring consistent safety standards and regulatory compliance across all business divisions and geographic regions.

This role requires regular travel to various regional operations and project sites. Work environment includes combination of office settings, field operations, construction sites, and remote locations. Some travel outside normal business hours may be required to support operational needs. The applicant should be local to British Columbia or Alberta.

This is full-time temporary role to cover a medical leave but could evolve into a permanent position.

Responsibilities

Regional Operations Support

- Partners with regional operations and division managers to implement and maintain Irwin's H&S; Governance Framework across all operational areas
- Provides strategic guidance and tactical, on-site support as directed, to achieve divisional Health & Safety objectives and measure & track relevant KPIs
- Conducts regular consultation sessions with division managers to assess safety performance, identify improvement opportunities, and develop action plans
- Facilitates cross-divisional knowledge sharing and best practice implementation
- Supports regional teams in developing localized safety procedures that align with corporate standards
- Regularly schedules and executes site visits in consultation with divisional planning teams, sometimes acting in a leadership capacity on short-term projects (Site Safety Coordinator)
- Review new or changed client documentation against internal documentation to conduct gap analyses, determine higher standard, output Project-Specific Safety Plans.
- Participate and engage in project-specific performance reviews (closeout meetings) and action OHS items

H&S; Governance Framework Implementation
- Serves as subject matter expert on Irwin's H&S; Governance Framework, providing training and guidance to operational teams




- Monitors framework compliance across divisions and regions, identifying gaps and recommending corrective measures
- Collaborates with division managers to customize framework applications to specific operational contexts
- Develops and maintains governance documentation, including policies, procedures, and implementation guides
- Participates in regular framework effectiveness reviews and recommends continuous improvements
- Chair or co-chair JHS Committee Meetings

Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensures all regional operations maintain compliance with applicable federal, provincial, and local health and safety regulations
- Conducts comprehensive risk assessments across diverse operational environments including office, field, construction, and remote locations
- Develops division-specific compliance strategies and monitoring programs
- Coordinates regulatory inspections and manages relationships with external regulatory bodies
- Maintains current knowledge of evolving legislation and communicates impacts to operational teams

Incident Management and Investigation
- Leads comprehensive incident investigations across all divisions, identifying root causes and systemic issues
- Develops corrective action plans in collaboration with division managers and ensures timely implementation
- Manages all incident documentation and reporting requirements in accordance with regulatory standards
- Conducts trend analysis of incidents across regions to identify patterns and preventive opportunities
- Coordinates with insurance providers and regulatory bodies as required

Training and Capacity Building
- Facilitates, targeted safety training programs, in collaboration with HR, for division managers and their teams
- Ensures all dynamic elements of the H&S; Governance Framework are incorporated into orientation and on-boarding programs




- Identifies need for specialized training for high-risk activities and equipment operation
- Helps ensure training matrix alignment with operational requirements
- Evaluates training effectiveness and implements continuous improvement measures

Performance Monitoring and Reporting
- Helps to maintain safety performance metrics for each division and region, as per the H&S; Governance Framework performance plan
- Prepares on-going reports for senior leadership on divisional safety performance and trends
- Conducts regular safety audits and inspections across all operational areas
- Facilitates management review meetings and supports data-driven decision making

Education and Experience

- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or related field preferred
- Skilled designation (CRSP, CHSC, or equivalent) preferred
- Minimum 5 year’s experience in health and safety-sensitive field, preferably in multi-divisional organizations
- Demonstrated experience supporting operational managers in achieving safety objectives
- Experience with safety management systems implementation and governance frameworks

Knowledge and Skills

- Comprehensive knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial occupational health and safety legislation
- Strong understanding of safety management systems and governance frameworks
- Proven ability to influence and support operational managers at various organizational levels
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in data analysis and trend identification
- Advanced communication and presentation skills for diverse audiences
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, safety management software, and reporting tools
- Project management experience with ability to coordinate cross-divisional initiatives preferred
