**Position Description**
**Molecular Biology**
**Assistant Research Technologist**
Length of contract: 10 months, 0.8 FTE.

The Genetics & Genome Biology program is pleased to invite enthusiastic, ambitious, and passionate individuals to apply to begin or continue to develop their research careers under the supervision of Dr.

Chantel Trost, an early career researcher who is striving to establish a strong, competitive, transformative, and inclusive research program in the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research & Learning at the Hospital for Sick Children.

The position will be in-person and entirely wet lab-based.

We are looking for an outstanding candidate willing to play a key role in establishing an alternative antimicrobial strategy for combatting antibiotic resistant
_Pseudomonas aeruginosa_
infections in humans.

The successful applicant will receive training in a wide variety of laboratory techniques, including: bacterial cell culturing, phage propagation, cloning, plasmid extraction and purification, PCR, DNA transformation, allelic exchange, reporter assays, genetic screens, spectrophotometry, agarose gel electrophoresis, and antibiotic susceptibility assays.

**Here's What You'll Get To Do**
Experimentally:
·Work with CRISPR-Cas systems in
_Pseudomonas aeruginosa_ .
·Work with bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria).
·Learn how to perform data analysis and hypothesis generation/testing.
·Learn qualitative and quantitative experimental techniques.
·Explore bioinformatics tools that relate to Dr.

Trost's research.
·Extract and sequence DNA, interpreting the results as they become available.
·Support cloning procedures.
·Generate biological stocks.
·Transform DNA into bacterial cells.
·Learn how to perform antibiotic susceptibility assays.
·Present your findings at institutional events, as appropriate.
·Take part in peer-reviewed publication processes.

Operationally:
·Help develop standard operating procedures.
·Help generate lists of chemicals, biological samples, and consumables stocks.
·Ensure biosafety, chemical, and laboratory safety policies and procedures are being complied with.
·Compile and maintain complete records of experimental data and procedures.
·Support all trainees to the best of your ability with ongoing support from Dr.

Trost.
·Work closely (on a daily basis) with our senior Research Technician to improve your ability to function more independently.
·Seek guidance from and meet with Dr.

Trost regularly (weekly or bi-weekly).

**Required qualifications:**
·BSc in Molecular Biology-, Chemistry-, Biology,- Biochemistry-, or Microbiology-related disciplines.
·Wet-lab experience.




·Familiarity with Type I CRISPR-Cas systems.
·Excellent oral and written communication skills.
·Strong academic record.
·A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity & inclusion.
**Assets:**
·Experience in biological screens, analyzing data, and interpreting complex results.
·Understanding of prokaryotic genetics.
·Demonstrated ability to construct simple, informative, and visually appealing figures.
·Familiarity with the peer-reviewed publication process.
