Description The Research Vivarium at St. Michael's is a state of the art, CCAC award winning facility, serving the in vivo based research and teaching needs of its scientists, physicians, and surgeons. The research conducted at the Research Vivarium emphasizes the medical specialties of St. Michael's Hospital, including diseases of the heart and circulatory system, trauma and metabolic diseases and disorders.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Evaluating the health of every animal in the facility, including breeding rooms and CL2 suites, and reporting any unusual behavior or health concerns to the veterinarian

Performing welfare assessments with minimal supervision, and interpreting the data collected to make recommendations for refinements

Administering various treatments to animals, including post-surgically

Maintaining animal health records, completing surgical debit reports, and recording narcotic and controlled drug usage

Corresponding with researchers are animal issues and/or treatments

Unpacking new arrivals and performing initial health exams

Changing bedding materials according to established schedules, including cages in CL2

Assisting in the ORs including making/sterilizing surgical packs,



dispensing drugs, setting up ORs and monitoring anesthesia during surgical procedures and recovering animals afterwards

Teaching animal handling courses to new users

Maintaining equipment (blood gas analyzer, medical gas tank)

QUALIFICATIONS

Veterinary Technician or RVT with a minimum of 3-5 years relevant experience

RLAT certification

Ability to think analytically and problem solve issues

Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member

Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills

Good understanding of CCAC Guidelines, OMAFA legislation

Must have a good attendance record and positive punctuality

Ability to multi task, keep track of work and prioritize

Surgical experience would be an asset

Experience teaching would be an asset
