The Position

Holland Bloorview’s Clinical Brain Computer Interface (BCI) program strives to provide children and youth with disabilities access to high quality, BCI-enabled recreation and play opportunities. The Clinical BCI team consists of occupational therapists and therapeutic recreation specialists from Holland Bloorview and engineers, research coordinators, and research assistants from the Bloorview Research Institute.

An Assistive Technology

Consultant (ATC)



is an individual who has acquired the education and training necessary to provide the appropriate consultation and support to clients to maximize their use of access technologies. These skills include an expertise in computer hardware and software, an understanding of programming, and an in-depth technical understanding of the operation of hardware and peripherals.

The ATC role in the Clinical BCI program is to ensure the proper function of BCI headsets, computers, and outputs (video games, switch toys, etc.) and be able to provide training instructions to families with varying knowledge of technology. Applicants must be comfortable learning novel technology systems, including setting customizations and hardware optimizations; have an interest in access technologies; be able to collaborate with children, youth, families, clinicians, and researchers; be able to problem solve; and have the willingness and ability to learn.

Key Responsibilities

- Prepare and test equipment for clinical BCI sessions
- Provide technical support during clinical BCI sessions
- Client appointments are primarily onsite; virtual appointments are offered to families participating in the BCI home loan program.
- Recreation group programming may be offered during evenings and weekends. Successful candidates must be able to flex their work hours to participate in sessions during evenings and weekends.

- Collaborate with staff/clients/families/community partners on use of BCI technologies for play and recreation
- Participate in training of families, staff and/or community partners in the use and maintenance of devices/software
- Prepare knowledge translation materials (presentations,



video tutorials, user manuals) to support the spread and scale of BCI programming across Ontario
- Maintain department equipment inventory system and support BCI home loan program
- Troubleshoot issues with software & hardware
- Prevent and control infection by sanitizing equipment
- Participate in the testing of new BCI systems and document results/recommendations
- Document workload and appointment notes in electronic client record system for all clients who have received service
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, support the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advance a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices
- Participate in clinical BCI program committees/meetings

Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in a rehabilitation or technology-related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience
- Expertise in computer hardware/software on Windows and Macintosh platforms, as well as handheld devices
- Previous experience with assistive technologies would be an asset
- Experience working with children with disabilities or non-verbal individuals preferred
- Proficient in problem-solving and troubleshooting, including over the phone or video conferencing, with clients/families/staff/community partners who have varying comfort levels with technology
- Recent experience in a health care setting or previous work experience in the field of access technologies preferred
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
- Demonstrated ability to organize time and meet deadlines
- Demonstrated initiative and self-direction
- The successful candidate must be available to work onsite outside of regular business hours (evenings and weekends)
