About the position

The Senior Marine Inspector’s duties and responsibilities include the following:

- Inspection of ships for regulatory compliance, seaworthiness, and protection of the marine environment, and issue inspection certificates.
- Investigates a wide variety of accidents, pollution incidents, and alleged infractions of the Canada Shipping Act and Canada Labour Code.
- Acts as project manager on multi-faceted audits/inspections of vessels covering nautical, marine engineering, and naval architecture.
- Conducts examinations and issue certifications for seafarers in accordance with the Marine Personnel Regulations.
- Audits ship safety systems, ship navigation, cargo handling and stowage procedures.

Education

- A secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives (see Note 1).
- A satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
- A valid Canadian Certificate of Competency as a Second-class Engineer (Motor Ship or Steamship) or higher (see Notes 2 to 5).

Note 1: The employer-approved alternatives to a secondary school diploma are: A satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience. Note 2: Candidates will be asked to provide proof of education and/or proof of Canadian certificate of competency. Experience

EX1: [Five] years of experience in marine design, construction, repair, operation, inspection,



quality assurance or other marine related areas or in technical or operational management of ships or marine related electrical engineering/technology or as master or chief mate or second or third-class engineer on ships of 150 gross tonnage or more.

Asset Experience

- AEX1: Experience as a chief engineer on vessels.
- AEX2: Experience as an employer representative or health and safety committee member /representative with respect to the Canada Labour Code Part II or the equivalent provincial health and safety legislation.
- AEX3: Experience in the development or implementation of safety management systems.
- AEX4: Experience in the development or implementation of quality assurance programs or systems.
- AEX5: Experience as a port captain or as an independent surveyor or as a surveyor for classification societies, Protection and Indemnity Clubs (P&I; Clubs).
- AEX6: Experience in design, construction or repair of commercial vessels or serially produced small vessels.
- AEX7: Experience in managing large technical projects.
- AEX8: Experience as a marine superintendent of a vessel.
