Role OverviewThis is a new, highly autonomous role with the opportunity to build and shape the Harm Reduction and Substance Use Outreach Nurse program. The nurse provides professional nursing support and delivers educational initiatives to community-based First Nations Health Service Organizations and FNHA nursing programs, focusing on mental health and substance use. The role supports the enhancement of nursing practice standards in communities, with a key emphasis on RN/RPN prescribing of opioid agonist treatment (OAT) and addressing the ongoing toxic drug crisis.ResponsibilitiesProvide professional nursing support and deliver educational initiatives to community-based First Nations Health Service Organizations and FNHA nursing programs, focusing on mental health and substance use.Support the enhancement of nursing practice standards in communities, emphasizing RN/RPN prescribing of opioid agonist treatment (OAT) and addressing the toxic drug crisis.QualificationsEducationBachelor’s degree in registered nursing or bachelor’s degree or diploma in psychiatric nursing, from a recognized university or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Additional training and education related to substance use, harm reduction, mental health and trauma-informed practice.Completion of BCCSU RN/RPN Prescribing Education Program is an assetOccupational CertificationCurrent practicing registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM)ExperienceThree (3) years of experience as a registered nurse (RN) or registered psychiatric nurse (RPN) providing clinical practice support in primary care, community and/or public health nursing or acute care, ambulatory care and/or outpatient centres, including two (2) years of experience caring for clients with harm reduction and substance use concerns.KnowledgeKnowledge of health status of populations, inequities in health, determinants of health and illness, primary care, health promotion, disease and injury prevention,



health protection, urgent and emergent care, rehabilitation, harm reduction and supportive care.Knowledge of the nursing process, conceptual frameworks of nursing, and theories and principles of nursing practice.Knowledge of evidence-based clinical nursing practice, including delivery of mental health and substance use treatment services, opiate agonist treatment options, current clinical practices, techniques of brief interventions, and required skills to observe, assess, and care for individuals needing nursing support in mental health and substance use.Other InformationMay have experience as Opioid Treatment Program Nurse, Pain & Addiction Specialist Nurse, Mental health and Addictions Nurse.Working at FNHAFNHA offers a range of employee benefits including municipal pension with employer contributions, holidays, group health benefits, and a Health Care Spending Account.
