POSITION SUMMARY The Operations & Strategy Lead is accountable for the performance, stability, and continuous improvement of Durham Bone & Joint Specialists' (DBJS) existing operations while leading the planning and implementation of approved growth initiatives.
Working closely with senior leadership, the role serves as a key operational and execution partner, translating organizational priorities and decisions into clear plans and measurable results. The Operations & Strategy Lead provides leadership with visibility into performance, risks, and emerging issues while independently advancing assigned priorities through analysis, planning, coordination, and implementation.
Existing business performance is managed primarily through DBJS's departmental and functional Leads. The Operations & Strategy Lead ensures these Leads have transparent objectives, appropriate resources, defined KPIs, and accountability for the day-to-day performance of their respective areas, while maintaining an organization-wide focus on performance, capacity, alignment, and continuous improvement.
As growth opportunities are identified and approved, the role supports business-case evaluation, develops business and implementation plans, and leads initiatives through launch and integration into ongoing operations. The balance between existing operations and growth initiatives will evolve with organizational priorities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Operational Leadership & Performance
- Provide leadership and oversight of DBJS operations through departmental and functional Leads, establishing clear priorities, performance expectations, KPIs, and accountability.
- Maintain an organization-wide view of operational performance, capacity, access, productivity, staffing, and service delivery, addressing issues that require cross-functional or broader organizational leadership.
- Coach and support Leads in resolving performance, staffing, workflow, and resource challenges while maintaining appropriate ownership of their day-to-day functions.
- Drive continuous improvement to strengthen operational efficiency, consistency, accountability, and readiness for growth.
2. People, Capacity & Business Performance
- Ensure staffing levels, organizational capabilities, and resources are aligned with current operating requirements and anticipated growth.
- Oversee workforce planning and support recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and leadership development in collaboration with departmental Leads.
- Monitor operational and financial performance and support budgeting, forecasting, capacity planning, and resource allocation.
- Provide senior leadership with clear reporting on performance, risks, trends, and areas requiring action or decision.
3. Senior Leadership Partnership & Execution
- Work closely with senior leadership to translate organizational priorities and decisions into actionable plans, responsibilities, timelines, and measurable outcomes.
- Take ownership of assigned operational and strategic priorities, independently advancing the analysis, coordination, problem-solving, and follow-through required.
- Investigate business and operational issues, develop practical recommendations, and ensure material risks or decisions are escalated with appropriate context and proposed solutions.
- Create greater leadership capacity by ensuring operational matters are effectively managed and organizational priorities continue to advance.
4. Growth & Implementation Planning
- Work with senior leadership to evaluate identified growth opportunities, current services, partnerships, and business channels from an operational and commercial perspective.
- Support evaluation of the business case, including demand, financial potential, capacity, resource requirements, risks, and operational feasibility.
- For approved opportunities, develop implementation plans and practical operating models addressing the people, processes, technology, infrastructure, and partnerships required for execution.
- Ensure growth initiatives are achievable within organizational capacity and support the long-term sustainability of DBJS operations.
5. Implementation, Launch & Integration
- Lead approved growth and strategic initiatives from planning through implementation, coordinating internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Establish clear deliverables, responsibilities, timelines, resources, and performance measures and maintain accountability for execution.
- Ensure operational readiness for launch, including staffing, workflows, training, technology, processes,
and reporting.
- Monitor early performance and integrate successful initiatives into DBJS's ongoing operational structure and performance framework.
The Operations & Strategy Lead works within the strategic direction established by senior leadership, providing the operational leadership, analysis, planning, and execution required to advance approved priorities and growth initiatives.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Success in this role is demonstrated through stable, efficient, and accountable operations; effective leadership and performance of departmental Leads; achievement of agreed operational and business objectives; and reliable execution of senior leadership priorities.
As DBJS pursues approved growth opportunities, success will also be reflected in the effective evaluation, planning, implementation, and integration of new initiatives without compromising the performance or sustainability of existing operations.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in business, commerce, healthcare administration, finance, operations, or another relevant discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in operations, business management, healthcare management, or a related environment.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing teams, managers, departmental Leads, or cross-functional initiatives.
- Experience with performance management, KPIs, workforce and capacity planning, business analysis, and implementation of operational or business initiatives.
- Strong business and financial acumen with the ability to analyze information, develop practical recommendations, and translate decisions into action.
- Robust project management, organizational, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to exercise sound independent judgment, manage competing priorities, and deliver results in a dynamic environment.
