SHOP FOREMAN
Stetson Hinton GM|Hinton, Alberta
You've mastered the trade. Now it might be time to build something bigger.
If you're an experienced, high-producing technician who has spent years becoming great at your craft, there comes a point where the next challenge isn't another repair order. It's leadership.
Stetson Hinton GM is looking for a Shop Foreman who wants to help develop the next generation of technicians and build a strong, accountable, high-performing shop.
We're going to be straightforward about the opportunity: our shop needs leadership.
We have a young team that is eager to learn and capable of much more. What they need is an experienced person in their corner - someone who can provide direction, technical knowledge, accountability and, most importantly, mentorship.
We aren't looking for someone to simply dispatch work and put out fires. We're looking for someone who wants to build technicians.
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
You may already be a foreman, team lead or senior technician. Or maybe you're the technician everyone already comes to when they're stuck. You're a strong producer. You understand how a profitable shop operates. You take pride in fixing vehicles correctly and efficiently, and your standards are high.
But you're also reaching the point in your career where passing that knowledge on matters.
You enjoy seeing an apprentice finally understand a diagnosis. You can challenge a journeyperson without tearing them down. You know when someone needs coaching, when they need encouragement and when they simply need to be held accountable.
Great technicians aren't just hired. They're developed.
YOUR MISSION
Your job is to help turn a young, developing shop into a disciplined, productive and technically strong service department. That means working alongside our technicians, identifying where they need help and giving them the structure and coaching to improve.
Success isn't just measured by what you can produce. It's measured by what the entire shop becomes capable of producing because you're there.
WHAT YOUR DAY LOOKS LIKE
- Start the day understanding the workload, technician capacity and potential bottlenecks.
- Work closely with the Service Manager and advisors to keep work moving efficiently through the shop.
- Provide hands-on technical support and advanced diagnostic assistance when technicians hit difficult problems.
- Review workmanship and help ensure repairs are completed correctly the first time.
- Coach technicians on diagnostic processes, repair techniques, efficiency and time management.
- Spend meaningful time developing apprentices and younger technicians.
- Identify individual strengths and weaknesses and create opportunities for technicians to improve.
- Set clear expectations around productivity, quality, attendance, organization and professionalism.
- Hold people accountable when expectations aren't being met - and recognize them when they are.
- Help technicians become more productive without sacrificing quality.
- Encourage communication and teamwork instead of technicians operating as individual islands.
- Help identify training needs and build development plans for the team.
- Work with management to improve shop processes, workflow, equipment utilization and overall performance.
- Lead by example when the shop gets busy and get involved when the team needs help.
WHAT YOU BRING
We're looking for someone with substantial automotive experience and strong technical ability. General Motors experience, technical training and current GM certifications will be significant assets. Credibility. Technicians respect you because you've done the work and understand the realities of the job.
Production. You understand efficiency, flat-rate productivity and what it takes to get work through a shop.
Technical strength. You're comfortable with difficult diagnostics and know how to teach someone how to think through a problem rather than simply giving them the answer.
Leadership. You can have difficult conversations, set expectations and hold people accountable.
Patience. Developing young technicians takes time. You're willing to teach instead of getting frustrated and taking the job over yourself.
Standards. You care about quality, safety, organization and doing things properly.
Humility. You don't need to be the smartest person in the room. Your goal is to make everyone around you better.
COMPENSATION - BUILT AROUND THE ROLE
This is a salary-based leadership position,
not a traditional flat-rate technician role. We recognize that the right Shop Foreman may come to us with very different levels of experience, General Motors training, certifications, diagnostic expertise and leadership experience. For that reason, base salary will be determined based on the experience, technical skill set and GM training you bring to the position.
But we don't want compensation to stop at salary. We want our Shop Foreman invested in the development and success of the entire technical team.
The successful candidate will work with management to develop a performance-based bonus structure tied to meaningful improvements within the shop.
That could include technician efficiency and productivity, completion of GM training and certifications, apprentice development, quality of work, reduced comebacks and the overall growth of the service team.
If you help our technicians become better trained, more capable and more efficient, your compensation should grow with their success.
We want to build that structure with the person we hire, so the goals are measurable, achievable and aligned between the Shop Foreman, technicians and management.
WHY HINTON?
This isn't a position for someone looking to coast through the next chapter of their career. It's for someone who wants a challenge. You'll inherit a young team with significant opportunity for development. There will be problems to solve, processes to improve and people who need coaching and direction.
But you'll also have something increasingly difficult to find in this industry: people who genuinely want to learn.
The automotive industry needs more mentors. Too many talented technicians leave the trade with decades of knowledge that never gets passed down.
At Stetson Hinton GM, we want to change that.
We want to build an workplace where apprentices become excellent journeypersons, good technicians become great technicians and experienced people have the opportunity to leave a real mark on the next generation.
If you've spent your career mastering this trade and you're wondering what the next stage looks like, this may be it.
COME BUILD THE SHOP WITH US.
If you want an easy job where everything is already figured out, this probably isn't your opportunity. If you want the chance to lead, teach, improve a shop and build a team you can be proud of, we'd like to talk.
