Under the direction of the Health Safety & Environmental Director the Environmental Specialist will work with all teams to identify and implement plans to reduce wastewater and to ensure compliance with city regulations. The incumbent will be part of the EHS team and work within multiple chemical manufacturing and food manufacturing facilities.

Position Description:

Review environmental regulations for applicability to site operations and create and maintain environmental programs and processes to meet regulations and other requirements.

- Lead the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
- Conduct analysis of process equipment to ensure compliance on air emissions and water discharge.
- Evaluate systems and design cutting-edge ways to improve environmental performance.
- Work collaboratively with senior staff, engineering teams, operations, maintenance, and regulators, and on multiple engineering and environmental projects, and monitor environmental improvements.




- Provide support with notification to regulatory authorities and governmental agency inquiries.
- Prepare regulatory submissions and maintain environmental permits.
- Prepare, maintain, and analyze environmental data, and track performance against company objectives.
- Develop and implement action plans to improve environmental performance.
- Conducting regular audits of multi-site facilities for regulatory compliance
- Engage with all regulatory bodies, such as MECP, City of Hamilton on compliance related matters and inspections.
- Prepare permit applications or renewals for all regulatory requirements.
- Lead or support the preparation and negotiation of air permit applications. Create and maintain air quality management systems that comply with air permits and air regulations.
- Assist with air quality/water permitting and compliance projects within scope/budget/schedule.
- Assist with the preparation of annual compliance reports, engaging with 3rd party environmental consultants (NPRI, TRA, GHG, etc)
- Monitoring utility consumption and loading requirements. and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Monitoring of Global Adjustment peak days for load shedding opportunities to reduce negative operational impacts.
- Develop guidelines and strategies for the disposal of hazardous materials.




- Provide regulatory guidance and ensure compliance with waste disposal and management.
- Provide technical insight to support EHS activities.
- Assist in development or delivery of health, safety and environmental training programs.
- Learn, understand and apply rigorous quality standards, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP)
- Other duties as assigned.

Abilities & Requirements:

- The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal knowledge, skill, and/or ability requirements of this position:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or related field.
- Five or more years’ experience in a related position.
- Sound knowledge of management systems with an emphasis on environmental and HSE.
- Knowledge of industrial environmental legislation preferred.
- Proven ability to coach, train, and mentor to a variety of audiences (frontline employees, senior management, and head office staff).
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Able to maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
- Effective communication skills (written and verbal).
- Strong attention to detail.
- Sound judgement.
- Ability to effectively develop and implement change.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Valid driver’s license. Requires travel between multiple sites.

Pay: $90,000.00-$110,000.00 per year
