The MCH Surgery Program is looking for dedicated and committed HCA's that are eager to learn about post operative patient care management. The Casual employee will provide safe and compassionate care for a wide variety of patient populations across all surgery units including 5 East (The CURRENT Surgical Care Unit opening this fall!), 6 East and 6 West. This would include patients under orthopedic, general, urology, gynecology and plastics surgery services as well as medicine services where applicable.

The successful candidate will gain the skills to care for all types of surgical patients as well as working within high functioning team environments.

Description

The Health Care Aide (HCA) is a regulated health professional who provides direct personal care and health support services to clients across the lifespan, in accordance with their scope of practice, regulatory standards, and government legislation. Functional supervision is provided by a member of the nursing team and may occur directly or indirectly in accordance with client needs, care context, and regulatory standards. Working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team the HCA provides care in alignment with documented care plans and assigned or delegated tasks, delivering assistance with activities of daily living, monitoring and reporting changes in health status, and supporting the physical, emotional, psychosocial and behavioural well being of clients.

HCAs attend to clients¿ comfort, engagement, and safety by recognizing changes in behaviour, responsiveness, participation, or signs of distress,



and by promptly sharing observations with the appropriate team member. They play a vital role in promoting comfort, dignity, and continuity of care, and demonstrate flexibility in responding to the needs of clients and the care team. HCAs actively engage in continuous improvement through feedback, self-reflection, and learning opportunities.

Required Qualifications Must be registered with and hold a valid practice permit from College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) prior to commencing employment.

Additional Required Qualifications

At least one year of recent and related adult acute care experience required, within the last two years.

Current Basic Life Support Healthcare

Provider (Level C). Physically able to assist with all aspects of patient/resident care and transport, e.g. walking, standing, bending, lifting and turning and other physical tasks required on the unit. Must be able to lift weights up to 11 kg (24 pounds) and push/pull weights up to 27 kg (60 pounds).
