The Artistic Director position at AMTC is a challenging and highly rewarding opportunity to foster new work, support emerging artists, contribute to the musical theatre landscape of Edmonton, and enrich the lives of students across Alberta.

About Alberta Musical Theatre Company

Alberta Musical Theatre Company is a non-equity, award-winning theatre for young audiences company now in its 42nd season of creating and touring original musical theatre adaptations of fairy tales for children. Each season, AMTC tours locally created original musical adaptations performed by exciting emerging artists to more than 200 elementary schools and more than 50,000 students.

The company was formed in 1984 as the Alberta Opera Touring Association with a mandate to produce traditional opera. Over time, the company began creating original works, which naturally evolved into the musical theatre genre. Today, AMTC productions are highly entertaining, sophisticated, and accessible original musical theatre created by Albertan writers and musicians.

These works are based on fairy tales and folklore and aim to engage, entertain, and inspire while addressing meaningful contemporary and universal human issues with sensitivity, humour, and a non condescending approach to young audiences.

On March 26, 2019, the Board of Directors approved a legal name change to Alberta Musical Theatre Company Society or Alberta Musical Theatre Company to more accurately reflect the company mandate.

Roles and Responsibilities

1. i) Acting as principal liaison to the Board of Directors and other organizations and assisting the Board in policy creation that strengthens and improves company infrastructure.
2. ii) Creating the draft budget for Board review and approval and administering the approved budget.

Reporting quarterly on the financial status of the organization and variance against budget.
4. iv) Writing and reporting on all operating and project grants along with Board representation.
5. v) Lead, and collaborate with the board as necessary, in the contracting, hiring, and management of all artistic, and principal production staff, while overseeing the day-to-day operations of these roles.
6. vi) Creating copy for all marketing and acting as project leader and principal liaison on all marketing endeavors.
7. vii) Programming and developing the production season.
8. viii) Assuming responsibility for the artistic integrity and public profile of the company. This includes meaningfully communicating with the local arts community and preparing and delivering public reporting that creates transparency, accountability, and strong community ties. This also includes attempting to form relationships with non theatrical corporate entities and political figures whose voice and presence can help amplify support and visibility for AMTC.
9. ix) Organizing and amassing volunteers for the Casino Fundraiser along with representation from the Board of Directors.
10. x) Establishing the production schedule and all seasonal deadlines in tandem with the Production Manager.
11. xi) Taking responsibility for the company social media presence, including monitoring and regularly contributing to the company accounts. This should include creating copy for and approving social media marketing for the elementary school tour.
12. xii) Acting as the Board extension of staff management in office and making suggestions or providing reports to the Board to encourage efficiency as well as a respectful and healthy workplace.
13. xiii) Ensuring administrative efficiency, strong operations,



and the maintenance of a safe and supportive workplace workplace.

Qualifications

- Knowledge of and passion for Theatre for Young Audiences
- Knowledge of and passion for musical theatre
- A long term vision for the company and for TYA in Edmonton and Alberta
- Commitment to AMTC Company Values
- An interest in developing the next generation of artists and audiences
- Significant background as an innovative stage director, actor, producer, or playwright
- Strategic and artistic thinker who understands organizational vision and growth
- Previous experience developing artistic projects and relevant artistic leadership experience
- Extensive knowledge of theatre and theatrical processes
- Experience and potential connections within the Edmonton arts community for collaboration
- A commitment to advancing the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and spoken
- Demonstrated ability to balance creativity with finances and human resources
- Proven collaborator with the ability to develop strong working relationships throughout the company
- Understanding of income generation including audience development, grants, fundraising, and other areas of revenue generation
- Understanding of and experience with balancing a budget and managing the details of a complex non profit system of revenue and expenses

Compensation

The role begins with a three year contract. Performance will be assessed each year with the possibility of renewal at the conclusion of the three year term. The annual salary is 40,000 dollars.
