Position: Part-Time Support Worker / Health Care Aide

Hours: Approximately 4–6 hours per shift.

Schedule: Multiple Shifts Available. Flexible; days and times can be discussed based on availability

Our family is looking for a compassionate, reliable, and physically capable Support Worker / Health Care Aide to provide support to a 37-year-old woman, M, in her family home and in the community.

Experience working with individuals with disabilities, stroke survivors, or people requiring personal care is preferred, but we are willing to train the right person. Training will be provided regarding M’s communication system, routines, and specific care needs.

About M

M is a 37-year-old woman who experienced a stroke last year and is currently non-verbal. She is cognitively engaged and communicates using a letter board. She is able to express her needs, preferences, choices, and interests, and it is important that the person supporting her takes the time to communicate with her directly.

M values her dignity, autonomy, independence, and involvement in decisions about her own life. The successful candidate should understand that although M requires significant physical assistance, she should be supported to make choices and participate in activities as much as possible.

This is a family home, and M lives with her parents and two children.

Responsibilities:

- The responsibilities will vary depending on M’s needs, the length of the shift, and her plans for the day. Duties may include:
- Providing regular personal care throughout the shift, including diaper changes, bathing, grooming, dressing, and hygiene support. On longer shifts, personal care may be required regularly throughout the shift according to M’s needs. On shorter shifts, personal care will generally take place at the beginning and/or end of the shift.
- Training will be provided on the safe and proper use of the transfer machine to assist M with transfers between her bed and wheelchair.
- Assisting with repositioning and maintaining M’s comfort and positioning throughout the day.
- Providing wheelchair assistance and supporting secure transfers and mobility.
- Accompanying M into the community,



including trips to the grocery store, parks, and other activities.
- Supporting M while she participates in grocery shopping at Superstore.
- Accompanying M to the park so she can enjoy fresh air and time outside the home.
- Supporting M at home while she supervises and spends time with her children.
- Assisting with M’s daily routines and activities while respecting her preferences and choices.
- Communicating with M using her letter board after training is provided.
- Supporting M in maintaining as much independence and participation as possible.
- Working collaboratively with family members and communicating respectfully about M’s care and needs.

Physical Requirements:

M requires significant physical assistance with positioning. She may gradually slide forward or down in her wheelchair and requires assistance to be safely repositioned. Depending on the day, she may require repositioning approximately 2–3 times per hour.

The successful candidate should therefore be physically capable of safely assisting with repositioning and mobility and comfortable performing the physical aspects of the role.

Training and guidance regarding M’s specific positioning and care routines will be provided.

A Typical Day

Every day may look different depending on M’s needs, interests, and family schedule.

For example, on some days, the support worker may assist M with personal care, grooming, and a trip to Superstore. On another day, M may remain at home and spend time supervising or interacting with her children. On other days, she may want to go to the park for some fresh air and time outside.

On most Monday–Friday mornings and afternoons, M’s first child attends school. The child's grandfather will take the child to school, while the support worker will accompany M in her wheelchair. Together,



they will walk across the street to the school for drop-off. The school is conveniently located directly across the street from the home. Afternoon shift staff will support M in picking up her child from school.

The role is therefore varied and person-centred, rather than being limited to a fixed list of tasks.

Flexibility in Duties:

Because the family is currently adjusting to a new transition in M’s care, the day-to-day responsibilities may evolve as her routines and needs become more established.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable with a reasonable degree of flexibility in day-to-day duties, where tasks may occasionally increase or decrease depending on M’s needs, family circumstances, and the activities planned for that day. Any significant or ongoing changes to the role will be discussed with the successful candidate.

- Comfortable supporting community outings and activities
- Able to work collaboratively with family members
- Comfortable with a role where daily activities and responsibilities may vary
- Previous experience is preferred but not required. Training will be provided to the right candidate.
