Join Our Team as a Strength & Conditioning Trainer/Kinesiologist at Performance Institute!
Personal Trainer / Strength & Conditioning Coach/Kin
Part-Time, with Opportunity to Grow | Performance Institute
Performance Institute is looking for an experienced, career-minded Personal Trainer / Strength & Conditioning Coach/Kin to join our coaching team.
This is not a typical commercial-gym personal training position. For more than 25 years, Performance Institute has worked with a remarkably diverse clientele—from youth athletes and everyday adults to clients in their 70s and 80s, national-level wheelchair athletes, elite Canadian figure skaters, professional athletes and actors. Our past and current clientele have included members of the Vancouver Whitecaps and actors such as Hugh Jackman, Amanda Peet, David Duchovny and Zac Efron.
Our trainers work in a dynamic, collaborative and supportive environment, delivering individualized semi-private training, one-on-one personal training and other specialized services. Regardless of whether they're coaching an elite athlete or an older adult who wants to stay strong and independent, we expect the same attention to detail, quality of coaching and commitment to the individual.
We are looking for someone who enjoys coaching, not selling; values great programming and attention to detail; and wants to become part of an established training team.
The Schedule
Our most important current need is Monday and Friday mornings, and applicants must be consistently available for both:
- Monday: approximately 5:45 AM–1:00 PM
- Friday: approximately 5:45 AM–1:00 PM
We are also looking for someone with additional flexibility elsewhere in the week, particularly Tuesday/Thursday mornings and for occasional vacation, illness and other staff coverage.
The position will likely begin at approximately 15–20 scheduled hours per week, depending on the successful candidate's availability and experience, with the potential to grow.
We are specifically looking for someone who has some flexibility beyond their regular scheduled hours. You will not be expected to be permanently “on call,” but the ability to occasionally pick up additional shifts with reasonable notice is important to this role.
What Training at PI Looks Like
Much of our training is delivered through individualized semi-private sessions. These are not traditional group fitness classes where everyone follows the same workout.
Clients follow individualized programs based on their goals,
abilities, injury history and training experience, while the trainer coaches multiple clients simultaneously.
Our trainers may also work with:
- One-on-one personal training clients
- Youth and adult athletes
- Active rehabilitation clients, depending on qualifications
- Fitness assessments
- Remote/online clients
- Team training and specialized programs
The successful candidate needs to be comfortable managing a busy training floor while maintaining excellent coaching, exercise technique and client relationships.
Qualifications & ExperienceRequired
- Bachelor’s Degree (completed or in progress) in Kinesiology, Human Kinetics, Sport Science, or a related field
- Experience training a variety of clientele
- Current CPR/First Aid certification
- Liability insurance
Highly Preferred
- Registered BCAK Practising Kinesiologist or eligible for BCAK registration
Preferred Skills & Attributes
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
- Ability to clearly communicate goals, expectations and exercise instruction
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Experience coaching, identifying movement inefficiencies and applying appropriate corrective strategies
- Ability to confidently coach clients with different goals, abilities and training programs simultaneously
- Robust attention to exercise technique and detail
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office, software navigation and data entry
- Professionalism in handling complex or stressful situations
- Marketing experience is an asset
- Personal experience as an athlete is an asset
- Specialized skills such as Olympic lifting, Yoga or Spinning are an asset
- CSCS certification is an asset
Most importantly, we're looking for someone who is dependable, coachable, collaborative and interested in continuing to develop as a trainer.
Compensation
$24-44/hr. plus eligible bonuses
Unlike many personal-training positions, this is not a role where you are expected to spend unpaid hours at the gym waiting to build a client roster. Scheduled working hours are paid.
Our compensation structure recognizes both scheduled coaching time and the additional responsibility associated with delivering training sessions. There are opportunities to earn more as you take on additional coaching responsibility and build your role within PI.
Benefits & Perks
- Supplements available at cost
- Friends & family discounts
- Complimentary facility use and group training sessions when not on shift
- Performance reviews at 6 months and annually
- Extended health benefits available after a 12-month probationary period for trainers working 20 hours/week
- PI will cover the cost of BCAK re-certification while you are employed with us
Working Conditions

- Compliance with all health and safety protocols
- Physical demands include standing/walking for extended periods and demonstrating exercises
- Comfortable working with gym equipment and machinery
