We are seeking a motivated, client-focused Associate Lawyer to join our Family Law group in the Guelph office. This is an excellent opportunity for a lawyer who is passionate about advocacy, practical problem-solving, and helping individuals and families navigate important life transitions with clarity, confidence, and care.
The Opportunity
As an Associate Lawyer specializing in family law, you will manage your own files with the support of other experienced lawyers, law clerks, and students, and the opportunity to lead your own marketing strategies that build your practice and professional brand. You will provide thoughtful legal advice, deliver exceptional client service, and contribute to a collegial team that values professionalism, responsiveness, and high-quality work.
What You Will Do
- Manage family law files from opening to resolution, including matters involving parenting, decision-making responsibility, support, property, separation agreements, and related issues.
- Meet with prospective and existing clients to gather information, assess legal needs, and explain options in a clear, practical, and compassionate way.
- Conduct legal research, review and analyze documents, and develop practical strategies tailored to each client’s circumstances.
- Draft, review, and revise correspondence, pleadings, agreements, motion materials, affidavits, financial statements, and other family law documents.
- Represent and support clients through negotiations, mediations, conferences,
and other dispute resolution processes.
- Work collaboratively with partners, associates, law clerks, legal assistants, and students to move files forward efficiently and effectively.
- Maintain organized files, track deadlines, manage client communications, and support billing and account-related tasks.
- Provide instructions, assign tasks, and review work completed by law clerks and students, as appropriate.
- Contribute to practice growth by participating in marketing, networking, and business development activities that support client relationship-building and file generation.
- Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the firm.
What You Bring
- Common law Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- Five or more years of experience practicing Family Law is considered an asset.
- Strong legal research, drafting, analytical, negotiation, advocacy, and file-management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
- A client-focused approach, sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to communicate with empathy, clarity, professionalism, and diplomacy.
- A willingness to be visible in the community and actively participate in marketing and business development efforts to help grow your client base.
- Strong computer skills,
including comfort with word processing and practice management software.
The ideal candidate for this opportunity will possess 5 or more years' experience as an Associate Lawyer practicing family law. This posting is for a current, active vacancy.
The base salary range for this role is $105,000 to $130,000. Base compensation reflects experience, qualifications, skills, and alignment with the role. Associates may have opportunities to enhance their overall earnings over time through performance, productivity, practice growth, and meaningful contribution to the firm., supported by mentorship, career development, and marketing opportunities that help build a successful and rewarding practice.
