Seeking a BI/Respite provider to assist a family in North Nanaimo (Jingle Pot Area) with supporting their 5 yo child with ASD. They are looking for someone to come and pick the child up on Saturday and/or Sunday and take them on outings around the community. As such, the selected candidate must have their own transportation and class 5 license. They should also have proof of a recent clean criminal record check for working with vulnerable populations (we can assist with this if needed) .

Pay is $35-$40/hr, depending on experience, invoiced directly to the Autism Funding Unit. This position is not employed by our company, but we are helping a family locate somebody who can contract privately.

Background:

The family has 3 young children, the eldest of whom has ASD. One parent works Friday-Tuesday, so the other parent is home with all three children these days. They would someone to come and pick the eldest child up to take him on community based outings to support him with accessing outdoor environments.

The parent at home is not able to drive, so is seeking somebody who is comfortable picking the child up and taking him to various parks and other community locations. He enjoys exploring nature, walking, and looking at trees/natural elements along trails. He requires 1:1 support and must be monitored closely to ensure he does not elope.

Duties:

Pick the child up once or twice per weekend and take him on short community based outings to various parks and other outdoor areas he can explore

Transport the child safely in your personal vehicle

Use basic behavioural strategies to support his cooperation with transitions

Support emotional regulation and encourage play/language when appropriate





Ensure his ongoing safety by monitoring his location, watching for signs of dysregulation, and helping de-escalate him if necessary

Transport the child home at the end of the outing and provide the parents with a brief overview of the day's activities

Outings could be as short as 2 hours and as long as 4 hours (They are seeking someone to come both Saturday and Sunday, but this position could be split if necessary)

Experience:

Experience working with neurodivergent children is necessary. You should be comfortable supporting child-led play, engaging in sensory play with the learner, and diligently monitoring his physical location to avoid potential elopement. You should be comfortable using a walking harness if necessary.

You should be proactive, kind, compassionate, and quick to respond. You should be able to chase him if necessary. You should have experience working with children, enjoy spending time with little ones, and be fun!

Pay:

The pay being offered is $35/hr-$40/hr (depending on experience) as a Behavioural Interventionist who will be responsible for invoicing the Autism Funding Unit. If you are unfamiliar about this process, support can be offered to help guide you on how to do this. This role would be ideal for a BI/EA/Support Worker who wants some extra hours over the weekend.
