Building Maintenance
Vancouver, BC - BC Children's Hospital & Women's Health Centre In accordance with the Purpose, Vision, Values and Coast Salish Teachings, and strategic direction of PHSA, safety, including both patient and employee safety, is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA. The Chargehand, Carpenter performs skilled carpentry at the journeyman level in accordance with applicable building codes and bylaws for a majority of the time; provides supervision to carpenters, painters, locksmiths, maintenance workers and other designated staff, and performs related administrative duties; facilitates the resolution of work problems by using recognized methodologies and liaising with clients; participates in the development and monitoring of preventative maintenance programs including the use of a computerized maintenance management system.
What You’ll Do
- Supervise designated carpenters, painters, locksmiths, maintenance workers and other staff by scheduling and coordinating work assignments, evaluating employee performance and determining related training and orientation requirements; inspect work and provide guidance/technical advice to facilitate resolutions to work problems to ensure compliance with established hospital/WorkSafe BC and other relevant standards/regulations; instruct and/or demonstrate correct work methods; compile and record performance incidents and refer to the Supervisor.
- Review work requests and consult with user departments regarding specifications and other project requirements; develop project/job plan by determining any and all implications and any hospital systems that will be affected; communicate with clients and plans for temporary alternate work and system arrangements; interpret drawings and specifications to determine materials and equipment required; calculate materials and labour in estimating cost of projects and make recommendations as required.
- Recommend changes or replacements to equipment, processes, material or maintenance through the assessment of operations, procedure and process using problem solving methodologies to document and identify root causes; suggest improvements to enhance efficiencies and/or cost effectiveness and provide input to the budget for assigned area.
- Participate in the establishment and monitoring of preventative maintenance programs by establishing/updating preventative maintenance tasks and schedule using the computerized maintenance management system and assigning staff to these tasks; check on the level of adherence to the preventative maintenance program by reviewing documentation and assists in determining the causes when schedules are not met.
- Provide training and orientation to staff by performing duties such as providing instruction and demonstration; provide input to the Supervisor regarding staff performance; participate in hiring panels as requested by reviewing applications, conducting interviews in conjunction with the Supervisor, testing candidates and providing hiring recommendations.
- Communicate and liaise with clients/user departments and other Facility Maintenance and Operations staff to gather information, resolve concerns and coordinate work that will impact other activities/areas; provide information regarding the status of work requests and attend interdepartmental meetings to represent and provide input to meet the operational requirements of the area.
- Coordinate the work of outside contractors to ensure adherence to specifications and other facility requirements; liaise with consultants by providing technical information regarding hospital systems; review consultant reports/recommendations and provide feedback/input.
- Prepare for work projects by arranging work schedules with user departments and assembling supplies, tools and equipment; perform skilled carpentry work in accordance with applicable building codes and bylaws in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of building structural elements, door hardware and locks, fixtures, and furniture using power tools such as mitre saws, table saws, routers, jointers, and sanders and hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, squares, chisels, levels, hand saws, clamps and planes.
- Maintain an inventory of supplies, equipment and tools; complete associated reports and records; evaluate/recommend purchase or related equipment and supplies; requisitions supplies and equipment, as needed.
- Oversee and update standards/procedures by reviewing documentation/recent literature, communicating/instructing changes to the staff and updating computerized and manual records; maintain and verify a variety of records including timesheets for designated staff and the documentation library for records such as building plans and diagrams by completing forms, filing documentation, and operating computerized databases.
- Carry out regular safety checks on equipment to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations; maintain an inventory of supplies, equipment and tools; complete related reports and records; recommend purchase of related supplies and equipment; advise on matters related to the storage of parts and inventory.
- Perform journeyman work as a Carpenter when required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
What you bring
- Certificate of Apprenticeship or Trades Qualification Certificate as a journeymen Carpenter recognized by the Province of B.C. Four years’ recent, related experience including two years in a supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples in social and health contexts, including supported by significant knowledge of Indigenous-specific mandates, including clear understanding of and commitment to eradicate Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination and embed Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging,
and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within health care settings. This involves familiarity and understanding Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within Building Maintenance contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth &
• Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women &
• Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study - BC Human Rights Code, BC Anti-racism Act and how they intersect across the health care system.
