The Cook is a key member of the Food Service Team at the assigned Food Service Hub. The Cook prepares and serves hot and cold meals from scratch, supports ordering, receiving, inventory and required records, and helps maintain a safe and sanitary kitchen. When required, the Cook also supports meal-delivery operations, including transporting meals and supplies to assigned schools.

The Cook may provide day-to-day operational coverage in the Kitchen Manager's absence or as directed. This fast-paced, rewarding position supports the delivery of nutritious meals to school-age children.

Roles and Responsibilities

- Provide day-to-day operational coverage in the Kitchen Manager's absence or as directed, including coordinating food preparation, assigning immediate tasks and escalating staffing, safety or operational concerns to the appropriate manager
- Assist Kitchen Manager with placing food orders according to program needs
- Receive and store products and maintain records Prepare hot and cold meals from scratch using standardized recipes
- Keep temperature and sanitation logs and other necessary reports
- Manage, track, and report inventory
- Comply with health, hygiene, and sanitation regulations in the preparation, handling and serving of food
- Serve meals to students and collect payment
- Support safe and timely meal deliveries to assigned schools, operating PEISFP delivery vehicles when required
- Other duties as required

Education Requirements

- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current Food Safety Certification
- Post-secondary education in a culinary arts program or training in a cooking program and/or Red Seal Certification is considered an asset

Experience

- Minimum two years of experience cooking large quantities of food from scratch in a banquet, catering,



centralized-kitchen or similar high-volume food-service environment
- Leadership or supervisory experience is considered an asset

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Ability to consistently prepare large quantities of food using standardized recipes, production schedules and established quality standards
- Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control
- Knowledge of food service; including cooking and preparing a variety of foods, quality standards and presentation techniques
- Adaptable to the needs of the students and the ability to be creative with food and menus for special dietary requirements
- Ability to work well with limited supervision
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
- Enthusiastic and motivated team player

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

- Regular standing, walking, bending, reaching and repetitive food-preparation activities in a commercial kitchen setting
- Ability to lift, carry, load and unload meal containers, supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs, with reasonable accommodation where required by law
- Regular exposure to hot and cold temperatures, kitchen equipment, food allergens, wet or slippery surfaces, and outdoor weather conditions during deliveries
- Work schedule may vary within program needs. Work schedules,



meal breaks and overtime will be administered in accordance with PEI employment standards and organizational policy

The PEI School Food Program offers a competitive cook salary of $22.89 per hour (+4% vacation pay). The standard work week is Monday to Friday. For this position, hours will be on an as needed basis with no set scheduled hours of employment. Contact for scheduling will be made as far in advance as possible although employees may be contacted on the day they are requested to work. Working months: September- June.
