Job Summary
Reporting to the Senior Leadership Team (CCTG-TTDR/QLMP Heads), the Director Molecular Pathology and Biobanking will lead strategy and innovation in biobanking, genomic, and correlative sciences at the CCTG-TTDR/QLMP within the broader Queen’s Community. The Director will play a critical role in ensuring the sustainability, relevance, and growth of the CCTG-TTDR/QLMP, and will build partnerships with academic, hospital, industry, and health system stakeholders, and responsible and impactful use of biospecimens, technology, and data for research. Strategic assessments of emerging biobank technologies, sample types, and processes, will also be essential to ensure the facility remains aligned with evolving researcher needs, regulatory requirements, and international best practices.
The Director will provide oversight of the planning, prioritizing, and management of the work of staff, providing strategic and tactical advice, guidance, and coaching, and hold responsibility for creating a community-wide working environment that is respectful, collaborative and productive. The Director may leverage centralized administrative resources to support strategic and operational directions. The role may also support other initiatives with the purview of CCTG or PMM in a similar capacity based on operational needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Growth and Sustainability:
- Lead development and implementation of a business strategy to ensure long-term sustainability of the facility within an academic and health care research environment. Contribute to strategy planning processes of CCTG-TTDR and QLMP.
- Identify opportunities for cost recovery and service models that align with institutional and research mandates.
- Support development of grant applications and funding proposals with investigators and research institutes.
- Provide regular business and impact reports to institutional leadership and governance committees.
- Identify risks and mitigation strategies to ensure business continuity
Partnerships & Collaboration
- Cultivate partnerships with hospitals, universities, research networks,
and academic clinical trial groups to expand the impact of the facility.
- Collaborate with key opinion leaders, clinicians, and researchers to increase use of facility and biobank resources in investigator-initiated and collaborative studies.
- Build relationships with patient groups and community stakeholders to enhance engagement, trust, and awareness of biobanking activities.
- Explore opportunities for strategic academic–industry collaborations that adhere to institutional and ethical frameworks.
Strategic Technology & Process Assessment
- Lead monitoring and evaluation of emerging biobank technologies, including digital platforms, automation, AI, and advanced biospecimen processing methods.
- Assess new sample types (e.g., liquid biopsies, organoids, digital pathology) and data integration strategies to anticipate researcher needs.
- Align facility and biobank operations and investments with evolving regulatory frameworks, accreditation standards, and international best practices.
- Engaging key opinion leaders, provide strategic recommendations to leadership on infrastructure upgrades, process improvements, and adoption of innovative technologies.
Operational & Governance Support
- Provide leadership and guidance to the administrative, financial and program management of all activities.
- Create a community-wide working environment that is respectful, collaborative and productive.
- Develop and provide supporting materials, implement schedules and agendas and follow-up action plans for all committee meetings and events.
- Collaborate with scientific and operational leads to integrate business strategies with biobank operations, quality standards, and compliance.
- Provide input on access policies, governance frameworks, and data-sharing agreements.
- Ensure alignment of all business development activities with ethical standards, privacy regulations, and institutional policies.
Team Leadership and Management
- Leads a cohesive, interdependent and highly functional team through training and mentorship.
- Provides oversight to the planning, prioritizing, and management of the work of staff, providing strategic and tactical advice, guidance, and coaching. Identify the need for staff resources, participate on staffing committees, and makes effective recommendations regarding employee selection.
- Manage performance by establishing performance standards, reviewing, and evaluating performance, and conducting formal performance reviews on an ongoing basis.
- Assess staff training and development needs and ensure that employees receive the training required to improve and sustain successful performance.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced / graduate degree (PhD preferred) in life sciences, health administration, or business (advanced degree in a relevant field preferred).
- Progressive experience (10 years minimum, with at least 5 years at a senior level) in business development, research administration, or partnership development in an academic health care or research setting.
- Proven leadership and management experience with demonstrated skills in organizing, motivating, and directing diverse professional staff.
- Demonstrated experience in working with multiple stakeholders and providing high-quality and tailored service
- Experience in grant development, funding negotiations, or collaborative research agreements.
- Advanced knowledge of biobanking, biospecimen research, clinical trials, or cancer genomics is required.
- Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience
SPECIAL SKILLS:
- Strategic planning, analytical, budgeting and financial management skills.
- Strong understanding of the academic research and health care environment, including funding models and regulatory considerations.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills across academia, hospitals, and clinical partners.
- Ability to translate scientific and operational priorities into sustainable business strategies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of emerging biobank technologies, biospecimen handling, and regulatory and quality management frameworks.
- Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills, demonstrating tact and diplomacy when interacting with individuals at every level and from many different perspectives.
- Ability to work in a complex environment, in a collaborative and collegial manner, using well developed relationship-building, influencing and negotiating skills to secure commitment and achieve results.
- Ability to delegate important projects and tasks to other team members.
- Robust organizational skills to coordinate and direct the work of the facility. Ability to cope with multiple demands, resolve priority conflicts and operate effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
