Job Summary The Dispatcher, Route Operations plays a key role in supporting the daily execution and efficiency of waste collection operations. As a key member of the fleet operations team, this role works closely with drivers, dispatch, management, and municipal partners to ensure daily service activities are completed accurately and all required documentation, reporting, and compliance obligations are maintained.

While performing core dispatch functions alongside the Dispatcher, Compliance & Administration, this position primarily focuses on coordination of daily routes, responding to operational changes and issues in real time, supporting workforce scheduling, and continuously improving route efficiency using GPS and telematics systems.

This role serves as an operational resource for the fleet and collection teams, ensuring routes are properly staffed, service commitments are met, and operational challenges are addressed promptly. The position complements the existing Dispatch function by focusing on route execution, operational coordination, and route optimization initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Morning Operations & Route Coordination

· Open the facility and complete start-of-day operational duties.

· Review daily staffing levels and route requirements to ensure service readiness.

· Make real-time route adjustments to accommodate staffing changes, service requests, traffic conditions, weather events, vehicle issues, and operational priorities.

· Provide operational support and direction to drivers throughout the day regarding route assignments and service delivery requirements.

· Coordinate with the Dispatcher, Compliance & Administration and drivers to maintain efficient route coverage and resource allocation.

Scheduling & Resource Planning

· Assist the Fleet Operations Manager with scheduling drivers and collection staff.

· Coordinate daily staffing adjustments for vacations, absences, and operational requirements.

· Support workforce planning efforts to ensure adequate route coverage and service levels.

Dispatch Operations





· Schedule and dispatch waste collection vehicles based on daily operational needs, predetermined routes, and customer requests.

· Communicate professionally with customers, drivers, supervisors, and operational teams to ensure timely pick-ups, deliveries, and service completion.

· Monitor route progress using telematics and dispatch systems; adjust daily routes in response to emergencies, road conditions, staffing levels, and customer needs.

· Respond promptly and professionally to service disruptions, vehicle breakdowns, customer concerns, and other operational challenges.

Route Optimization & Systems Support

· Work closely with the Technical Support Lead to review route performance and identify opportunities for improved efficiency.

· Assist with route planning, route redesign, and optimization initiatives using GPS and telematics software.

· Review operational data and performance metrics to support continuous improvement efforts.

· Assist with maintaining route information, mapping systems, and fleet management software.

Reporting & Administrative Support

· Prepare and distribute accurate operational reports for internal teams, customers, and municipal partners, including service logs, route summaries, vehicle assignments, and compliance-related documentation.

· Document key operational data such as route performance, driver hours, customer feedback, and vehicle service schedules.

· Maintain accurate dispatch records and operational documentation.

· Provide administrative and operational support as needed to ensure smooth and efficient daily operations.

· Support management reporting requirements as commensurate with the role.

Safety & Compliance Support





· Ensure dispatch and routing activities follow company policies, service standards, and operational procedures.

· Support the Fleet Operations Manager by communicating operational requirements and service expectations to field personnel.

· Assist with incident reporting, documentation, and follow-up activities as required.

Qualifications & Skills

- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience in dispatch, logistics coordination, or operations support—preferably within the waste management or transportation industry.
- Valid G class driver’s licence is required.
- Experience with route planning, dispatch software, GPS systems, and telematics platforms is considered an asset. Specific experience with the application Samsara is preferred.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities, with the capacity to multitask in a fast-paced operational environment.
- Solid geographical knowledge of service areas and surrounding regions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel); familiarity with financial, operational, or service-tracking software is an asset.
- Strong report-writing skills, with the ability to prepare clear, accurate, and professional documentation for customers, internal departments, and municipal partners.
- Ability to stay calm, composed, and solution-focused while managing time-sensitive issues.

Pay: $26.00-$28.00 per hour
