Hourly wage: $110–$150/hour | Full-time | 24/7 Emergency Hospital

Are you an experienced Emergency Veterinarian looking for a supportive team, a diverse emergency caseload, and a schedule that gives you plenty of time away from the hospital?

Huronia Veterinary Emergency Clinic (HVEC) in Barrie, Ontario, is looking for a full-time Emergency Veterinarian to join our established 24/7 emergency team. We are ideally looking for an experienced ER veterinarian who is confident managing hospitalized and ICU patients while also supporting outpatient emergency cases.

This is an important senior role within our team. You’ll often take primary responsibility for our ICU while providing clinical support and mentorship to newer emergency veterinarians and working closely with our experienced RVT and support teams.

What You’ll Do

As an Emergency Veterinarian, you’ll see a diverse and rewarding caseload while playing an important role in supporting our hospitalized and critical patients.

Your responsibilities will include

- Managing hospitalized and ICU patients, often taking primary responsibility for the ICU overnight
- Assessing and treating a wide variety of emergency cases




- Performing emergency soft-tissue surgical procedures
- Supporting outpatient emergency caseloads alongside other DVMs
- Working collaboratively with our experienced RVT and support teams
- Providing clinical guidance and mentorship to newer emergency veterinarians
- Communicating effectively with clients and referring veterinarians
- Working independently and confidently during overnight shifts

Common presentations include trauma, gastrointestinal disease, toxicities, respiratory distress, endocrine emergencies, and other critically ill patients requiring immediate intervention. We are approximately an hour from the GTA and have access to specialty referral when cases require a higher level of surgical or specialty care.

Your Schedule

Our full-time DVM schedule follows a 2-day / 2-night rotation followed by 4 days off:
- 2 day shifts: 8:00 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.

- 2 night shifts: 8:00 p.m. – 8:30 a.m.

- 4 days off

During the day and evening, there are generally an additional 1–2 outpatient DVMs in the hospital seeing incoming emergencies until approximately 10:00 p.m. Overnight, you’ll typically be the sole DVM in the hospital, so confidence working independently and making clinical decisions is important. Our rotating schedule includes days, nights, weekends, and holidays, allowing us to provide emergency care 24/7, 365 days a year. In return, the rotation provides longer stretches of consecutive days off and greater flexibility for vacations and important life events.

Our Hospital HVEC is equipped to provide advanced emergency and critical care around the clock. Our hospital features:
- Dedicated ICU

- Digital radiology

- Ultrasound

- Comprehensive in-house laboratory diagnostics

- 24/7 emergency and critical care support

We work closely with local animal shelters and rescue organizations by providing discounted emergency veterinary services to help ensure animals in need receive timely medical care. We also maintain robust relationships with local veterinary technician colleges, providing student placements, hands-on learning opportunities, and mentorship to help develop the next generation of veterinary professionals.

While this position is ideally suited to an experienced emergency veterinarian, we know that every veterinarian's career path looks different.

We have several newer DVMs on our team who are continuing to build their emergency experience, and we are committed to providing mentorship and support as they grow.

About Huronia Veterinary Emergency Clinic

Huronia Veterinary Emergency Clinic was established in 2001 through the cooperative efforts of veterinarians in Barrie and the surrounding communities to provide emergency after-hours services.

Today, HVEC has grown to serve clients from 19 member veterinary clinics, as well as clients referred by veterinarians throughout the surrounding area. We believe in working as partners with primary care veterinarians to provide patients with the best possible care when they need emergency support.
