Job Summary

We are seeking an entry-level Fire Protection Engineering Technologist to support fire protection projects for nuclear, power-generation and other complex industrial facilities.

Working under the direction of experienced engineers, the successful candidate will assist with field investigations, system assessments, engineering calculations, drawing preparation, technical documentation and project coordination.

This position is suited to a recent graduate or early-career technologist who has a strong interest in fire protection engineering and wishes to develop specialized expertise within Canada’s nuclear and energy industries. Previous nuclear experience is not required but would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

· Assist engineers with fire protection designs, calculations, specifications, reports and design modification packages.

· Support fire hazard assessments, fire protection assessments, code compliance reviews and system evaluations.

· Collect, organize and verify facility, equipment and system information required for engineering assessments.

· Prepare and revise engineering drawings, sketches, equipment layouts and markups using computer-aided design software.

· Assist with the evaluation and documentation of active and passive fire protection systems, including:

o Automatic sprinkler and water-spray systems o Fire-water supply and fire pumps o Standpipe and hose systems o Fire detection and alarm systems o Special-hazard suppression systems o Fire separations, firestopping and structural fire protection o Emergency lighting, exit signage and life-safety systems

· Perform basic fire protection calculations, including hydraulic, water-demand, occupant-load, egress and combustible-loading calculations, under engineering supervision.

· Research and summarize requirements from applicable building codes, fire codes, NFPA standards and CAN/ULC standards.

· Participate in facility walkdowns, field investigations, inspections, testing and commissioning activities.

· Document field conditions through measurements, photographs, sketches, equipment records and inspection notes.

· Assist with the identification and documentation of fire hazards, system deficiencies and code-compliance issues.

· Maintain equipment inventories,



inspection records, deficiency lists, action trackers and other technical databases.

· Review drawings, vendor documents and technical records for completeness, consistency and conformance with project requirements.

· Support coordination between fire protection, architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural and other engineering disciplines.

· Assist with the preparation of project scopes, cost estimates, schedules, proposals and progress reports.

· Participate in technical meetings and document decisions, action items and project requirements.

· Perform assigned work in accordance with RNC’s quality-management procedures and applicable health and safety requirements.

Qualifications

· Diploma or advanced diploma in fire protection engineering technology.

· Recent graduate or typically up to three years of relevant work experience.

· Basic understanding of fire protection systems, building construction and life-safety principles.

· Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, codes and technical documents.

· Familiarity with computer-aided design software such as AutoCAD.

· Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.

· Strong technical writing, communication, organization and problem-solving skills.

· Careful attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate technical work.

· Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines.

· Ability to follow technical direction while progressively assuming greater responsibility.

· Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.

· Ability and willingness to travel to client sites within Ontario and elsewhere in Canada, as required.

Preferred Qualifications

· Advanced diploma in Fire Protection Engineering Technology from an accredited Canadian college.





· Eligibility for registration with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists as a Certified Engineering Technologist or Certified Technician.

· Relevant co-op, internship or early-career experience in fire protection, building systems, consulting engineering or industrial facilities.

· Familiarity with the National Building Code of Canada, Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, NFPA standards and applicable CAN/ULC standards.

· Experience preparing or revising fire protection drawings using AutoCAD, Revit or similar software.

· Familiarity with hydraulic calculation, fire-alarm design or building-code analysis software.

· Experience conducting site inspections, equipment surveys or construction reviews.

· Experience in the Canadian nuclear, power-generation or another highly regulated industry.

· Familiarity with nuclear facilities, quality-assurance programs, configuration management or engineering-change-control processes.

· Existing or previous security clearance for Canadian nuclear facilities.

· Interest in obtaining industry certifications and pursuing continuing professional development in fire protection
