Position Overview The Fractional Controller serves as a senior financial leader for a portfolio of MacMillan Consulting clients. This is a Permanent, full time position, working across a portfolio of MacMillan Consulting clients. In this role, you will provide Fractional, embedded controller-level expertise — overseeing accounting operations, ensuring financial integrity, and delivering actionable insights that help clients make confident business decisions.

You will work across multiple client engagements simultaneously, adapting to the unique needs of each organization.

Location: Hybrid, partly in office, partly remote.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Close

- Manage the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes for assigned clients
- Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP (or applicable standards)
- Deliver timely, accurate financial packages to client leadership and stakeholders

Accounting Operations

- Oversee and review accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activity
- Establish, document, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Manage chart of accounts and ensure consistent, accurate coding

Budgeting & Forecasting

- Partner with client leadership to develop annual budgets and rolling forecasts
- Perform variance analysis and provide clear explanations of budget-to-actual results
- Support cash flow forecasting and working capital management

Compliance & Audit Readiness

- Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and local tax and regulatory requirements
- Coordinate with external CPA firms for tax filings, audits, and reviews
- Maintain organized, audit-ready financial records

Team & Systems Leadership

- Supervise and mentor client bookkeeping and accounting staff where applicable
- Evaluate and optimize accounting technology stacks (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Xero,



etc.)
- Identify automation opportunities to improve efficiency and accuracy

Strategic Advisory

- Serve as a trusted financial advisor to client CEOs, founders, and operations leaders
- Support fundraising, M&A; due diligence, or financing processes as needed
- Provide financial modelling and scenario analysis for key business decisions

Qualifications

Required

- CPA certification required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- At least 3-4 years proven, prior Controller Experience
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including controller or senior accounting manager roles
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, IFRS and ASPE – must have strong financial reporting experience.
- Proven experience managing multiple priorities and client relationships simultaneously
- Proficiency with accounting platforms such as QuickBooks Online, Xero, NetSuite, or Sage Intacct
- Prior Experience with ERP implementations and strong technical knowledge
- Excellent communication skills — able to translate complex financial data for non-financial audiences

Preferred

- Experience in a public accounting firm or fractional/consulting accounting role
- Exposure to multiple industries (e.g., professional services, e-commerce, SaaS, manufacturing, construction, non-profits)
- Experience with financial tools such as Dext, Bill.com, Gusto, Rise HRIS, ADP, Expensify, and reporting platforms like Syft and others are highly desirable
